'19 GT2 RS vs 2003 996 tt

on mulholland hwy this AM, in an area devastated by last years SoCal fires, i find myself at a stop sign marvelling at the ass end of a shiny new paper plated silver/blk 2rs.

i feel i've seen a unicorn and although feeling like a red headed step child, i nevertheless happily follow this car, as we meander miles down the road apiece, all at a stately 50 mph.

we end up at a stop sign that is momentarily two lanes and i glance over and give him a well meaning thumbs up ( "for best porsche ever" )..

he sees me, turns his nose at me with faint acknowledgement - my car only appears threatening upon viewing me in a rear view mirror - and proceeds to drive off, his nose momentarily pointed skyward.

before he does? i shift fingers of salutation and gears.

my takeaway?

it's $275k better looking than my old sow. but it damn sure ain't $275k "faster" lol

Did he mistakenly interpret your thumbs up as a "good to go" sign for a head-to-head run"? Like "thumbs up, I'm ready to go"?

yes.

That type of attitude is all over central florida.
Even c7 owners raise their nose sky high when i used to pull up next to them in my old z06.

Usually tell them theyve got an awesome car.
90% of the time they just ignore me.

So when i got my 996tt i tinted the windows dark
And drive around windows up and no one bothers me, unless its a mustang, its always a mustang.

There are Porsche guys who see the beauty of all kinds of cars, especially Porsche's, and see the common DNA and shared passion from a ratty 924 that is some high schoolers dream to a Carrera GT.

And then there are snobby rich guys who happen to be driving a $400K Porsche and see the latest swankiest Vacheron Constantin watch as having more in common with their GT2 then your Turbo...

Judgments being made on body language? I can understand making some assessments based on talking to someone, but judging someone based on their body language can many times be imprecise.

It reminds me of some of the posts made on Corvette forums, where people will post things like "I was sitting at a stoplight in my C7 Vette when a guy in a Miata pulls up next to me. I see him look over at my car with a look of jealously" or "I pulled up next to a Porsche 911 and the guy's lady sitting in the right seat looks at my C7 Vette and I could tell she was thinking "I'd rather be riding in that guy's car."

Well yeah but normally if you give an enthusiast a big smile and thumbs up? Normally its given back.

I get more attention in my beat up old tj than i ever got in my z06. I dont want attention in my 996tt.

I just give them a wave. I don't care if they wave back or not.

another thing i remembered was that at least 4 other porsches of various iterations all flashed their beams or "thumbs up" gestured on the same couple hour drive in a non judgmental "there is no substitute" kind of way. it's customary up here. whether its a 914 or an rs to "say hello". kind of like when the bike riders all take their hands off the handlebars in that gesture.

i think the guy was just being ( or is ) a self important p***k lol

Who knows man, maybe hes new to the area or from NYC, or hell from sydney.
maybe he was minding his own business and this upstart 996TT wild child ruined his GT2RS symphony.
Why are you so worked up about it?
I mean you can't be THAT SURPRISED with the reaction, there has to be some part of you thinking stereotypical.

i'm not "worked" up lol. what suggests that i am? i was bored so i shared an anecdotal occurrence i found both mildly amusing and equally insulting.

but now im replying to you. which takes boredom to an entirely new level.

"upstart 996 TT wild child"?! LOL.

I'm sure I didn't. I think the overarching point for me was the lack of graciousness. I was taught that It's gauche not to acknowledge a compliment.

Whatever happened to noblesse oblige? lol

ok gotta go wave to some more nice folks now. Talk to ya later. 😛

Lol off to go unhinge owners with your thumb of crassness, and the audacity to compliment beautiful cars!
