Default Fuel smell

Hi.
My 2002 996tt developed a fuel smell only with the A/C on in the cabin. A/C off no smell.
I walked around the car sniffing for fuel and can't detect anything. I pulled the front right fender lining to inspect the evap system.
I could not find any missing or disconnected hoses. I did find a split outer cv boot. Yippie ;-(
I also removed the right rear fender liner and didn't see anything.
I did notice while washing the engine I notice rat poop and an oily film on/in the rinse water.
Please advice where else I should check next?
The moisture seen in the photo is rain water.

A dealer ran an OBD and got no codes. Now no smell but it is at half tank now. I may fill it up again a see if there is a leak or charcoal canister failure. What should I look for?

canister failure absent a proper diagnosis = an inability to re-fuel normally. leaks are entirely different and a 911.

I have not had any refueling issues. So I best not touch the canister.

Update. Took it back to my Indy shop. This time they could smell the gas. It was an occasional/intermittent smell. This time they used the big official Porsche computer to reset my system. This time as before no code.
The mechanic recommended a new gas cap
If that doesn't work then purge valve.
Strangely. I had 1/4 tank when they ran the diagnostic. When I started the car it read empty, and miles remaining dropped to 0 within 2 mins.
Scare the #%*out of me. So I put $30. Then the gauge read more than 1/2 tank. Now I notice the empty bottle sound when starting and no fuel smell.
On my W210 E55 whenever I open the gas cap there is a noticeable noise of pressure release. Never heard that on the 996. Is it normal?
