Default Rattle noise coming from driver side Turbo area

Hey there,

New member in the 996tt family. I just bought this car and it has a big rattle coming from the driver's side Turbo area. I've use metal rod as a stethoscope, it's not coming from the block but from the exhaust Turbo side and cat converter.

Cam someone listen in and tell me if they've heard this noise before, and how can I fix it?

Thanks!

Have you checked all the heat shields? Mine are always coming loose and making noise. Get under there with a rubber mallet and tap around.

Hi, thanks for your answer.

Yes it's the stock exhaust. I also checked the heat shields and it's not that.

If the catalytic converter is breaking apart, can it damage the turbo?

Thanks again!

I had a rattle on mine that I’d convinced myself was a bad cat—turned out to be a loose heat shield. Advise
to take it to a good tech who can put it on a lift to eliminate simple causes before throwing $$ at it.

How many miles are on it? You will need to get under it and start shaking the exhaust and heat shields. The shields have 3 bolts IIRC per side, and it is possible that one of the bolts is in there but the hole is larger than it and can rattle.

There is another possibility. I remember many years back a 996TT owner had a rattle from a flow director inside the muffler breaking off.

The piece which broke off was the half clamshell looking thing at the bottom of this photo.
