How to get a full tank of fuel
Kinda silly question but it is annoying me. I have noticed that when I fill up, once it clicks off, I cannot top it off without it overflowing. So I have learned that once it clicks, that is it. When this happens, sometimes the gauge reads at the top and sometimes it's like 7/8ths. I want the tank to read full, so is there a trick to making this happen each time? Or do I just go slower when filling up, ie use the slowest notch and not the fastest?

I personally keep my hand on the lever while filling up my 996 Turbo. As I get close to filling up the tank, I slack off the grip to achieve a much slower flow rate. When the auto shutoff engages, I remove an inch or two of the nozzle and from there it takes only a small squeeze of the handle to bring the gasoline to the top of the filler neck. My gas gauge always reads full after filling up this way.

I invert the fuel filler nozzle to avoid this (as I've read some classic 911 guys do, as well).

yeah, invert and hang onto the nozzle is really the most consistent method. i just replaced my fuel vent filler deal and it worked perfectly for like a week with the nozzle laying inside and the latch on the nozzle set at its fastest flow position.
now, i'm holding onto the nozzle and once it shuts off on its own, carefully adding "one" more squeeze to obtain 100% capacity.

To clarify, the technique I use (posted above) does not involve inverting the nozzle.
At least on my car, inverting the nozzle is not required to achieve a full (to the top of the neck) tank of gas.
Gas nozzles in Georgia do not have vapor capture housings, so maybe that's why the normal use of the nozzle works.

I get consistent full tanks by letting it fill locked at full flow. At the first click off I turn the pump handle sideways handle parallel to the ground and squeeze about half way until it clicks off

On my air cooled cars I have to invert the nozzle for it to go past half full without clicking off. I've found with the turbo, click means full. Anything more and it overflows. I pretty much know how many gallons it will take to fill it and I slow the flow when it gets near that point.

I had to resort to turning the nozzle handle nearly upside down to allow the tank in my Turbo to fill consistently to full without overflowing or shutting off too soon.

I'm glad this thread exists and other people invert the nozzle to pump gas. A lot of the time I feel like I look like a crazy person when I invert the nozzle but other days I don't care who sees me.

+ 1 on Dock's procedure - I wait for it to click, then let it settle, then top it up.
