Is there obvious soot in one (but not both) of your exhaust tips?

That could be an indicator of cylinder scoring/buggered rings in one cylinder bank.

Something is consuming the oil if there are no obvious leaks, that is too much oil to consume in such short intervals.

As mentioned, there should be puddles or some visible sign at that rate. Smell your tips, does it smell like oil? No drops underneath? If not, I'd look at your oil level sensor or oil level in the cluster, they are known to fail.

Runs strong and otherwise seems great. Thoughts on the high oil consumption?

Thanks
Sounds like the turbos

What was the verdict when you brought it in?

Also following for an update, since my turbo has a very similar consumption rate with slightly rich/smokey cold starts. Changed oil at 49200, low oil warning at 50200.

Currently using Motul 5w-40 in my case.

that's scary and not "normal" either. at most you should have needed one qt in 1k miles.

in 10 years, i've never even seen a 'low oil" warning! or had a "smoky" start.. unless parked on a steep incline.

You might want to switch to 5w-50, it may help reduce consumption.

Oil weight isn't going to affect that kind of consumption. If you're burning that much oil, you have a serious mechanical issue. My car uses no appreciable oil at all, even with my doing auto-x and tracking the car.

Engine lubrication
Type Dry sump lubrication with separate oil canister
Oil cooling Via oil−water heat exchanger on pressure side behind oil pump
Oil pressure at n=5000 rpm, T=90°C Approx. 6.5 bar
Oil pressure indicator Oil pressure indicator lamp plus instrument
Oil consumption Approx. 1.0 l/1000 km

Assuming there are no external leaks, I would say bad valve guides, seals and/or broken oil rings.

Take a look at your exhaust for signs of oil burning.

I recall reading previous threads on this forum awhile ago that Porsche had stated the a quart every 1k miles was acceptable., .

normal and acceptable yes. the OP has a different issue w/ smoke etc? i'd be concerned if i didn't use a qt every 1k miles and i'd swear the car was sitting.

the more recent poster that changed oil and had a "low oil warning" after 1k miles? is also reporting something "unusual". a normal drain without draining the turbos ( 1/3 qt max ) will require a refill of 8-8.5 qts to "top". if you have a low warning after only 1k miles? something is amiss. or, it wasn't properly re-filled.

Pull the pressure hoses from the turbochargers to intercoolers. Use a 7mm socket for the hose clamp. Check to see if you have oil pouring out of the hose/intercooler (major issue for the 993TT>> you can look at the sticky threads on the 993TT forum) If they are dry, you most likely have valve guide and or piston ring issue. A leakdown tests will dial in where your problem is>>100PSI of air coming thru your oil fill cap is your rings, and air coming out your exhaust is your exhaust valve/exhaust guide and finally air pushing into your intake/air filter will be your intake valve/valve guides.

^ thanks Kevin.

I'm local in Seattle, so I may ping you with some questions. I've been wanting to bring my car over for your tune, but need to sort out health related things like this before I'd feel comfortable compounding the issue.

Just to clarify my prior comment, it's not necessarily "smoking" on start up in my case. Just white smoke + super rich smell on cold start. I did the oil change myself, including draining the turbos and left it off at 1 bar below the top. After 2.5 months and ~700 miles of occasional use (work & back a couple times a week, store/casino/etc, with some week-ish breaks while it was raining), it took exactly 1.5q of oil to bring the oil level back up to 1 bar from the top. No pools/spots on the ground as far as I can tell, but obviously it has be be burning up/absorbing/leaking in some fashion to go through that 1.5q in a short amount of time.
