996 TT Gas Cap Tether

996 TT Gas Cap Tether
I apologize up front. I am one of those concours freaks. I want my car to be absolutely perfect. My latest project: the gas cap tether. Mine is broken. I have a replacement but I am not sure how the non cap end attaches to the body. I have seen several different approaches on the web. That is the problem. I'm not sure which is correct. Some mount in the center of the hinge. Some mount below the hinge. Some are on top of the bracket, some are mounted below the bracket.
If you have a 996 with the original gas cap tether, could you please post a photo? Thanks.

@Dock: Nice color 02 TT You have there. Mine is an 01 TT Thanks for the photo. You can see my door hinge is wider than the door hinge in your photo. I wonder if the hinge in my car was replaced and is after market?? I clearly cannot attach the tether where yours is attached.

It looks like you're faced with either moving the hinge (I don't think I would do that), or attempting to get the attachment pin in the stock location.

I found the part number on the hinge...the part number starts 997xxxxxx SO it must mean that the hinge was replaced as some time. If I get a 996 hinge the tether should fit fine.
Thanks all for your help.

Great question. Your hinge is without question different than my hinge. I have no idea if your hinge represents what was stock for an '01. Your cover is also missing the tire pressure placard. Maybe that was standard for an '01. I don't know, just noticing the difference.

I ran into this same thing when I replaced the hinge on my fuel door; I also had a new cap to put on at the same time (bought entirely to have a tether, lol) and only then found that the 997 hinge partially covers the hole for the tether.
From what I understand, the 996 hinge has been superseded by the 997 one. Maybe you can find old stock of the 996 hinge.

Yes, you are exactly right.
So in the mean time I have put the tether under the spring. But, of course, it doesn't fit unless you put the tether BELOW the sheet metal and the plastic rivet on the top of the sheet metal.
I will be on the look out for a 996 hinge (which was superseded by the 997 hinge).
BTW...on your 01...do you have a tire pressure sticker on your fuel door?
Thanks!
