The car is in California, so I'm thinking that there's not much heavy upkeep on the polished hard lines.

[QUOTE=Dock;15791171]My understanding is that Porsche stopped applying cosmoline on the underside years ago.
For better corrosion protection methods I'm sure, but it's what we have on this model and it works very well.

I actually bought Cosmoline for my truck and sprayed it. Came out awesome and doesn't look like a film covering it. Hardly noticeable. We'll see how it looks in 20 years.

It does take some patience and time but if you attack it patiently it doesn't take very long, having the correct tools and approach will determine the outcome.
once it's detailed it is actually easier to maintain. the type of cosmolene porsche used on the 996 is much more thicker and some areas will look like a payday bar once the rocks an pebbles get embedded.
if your worried about corrosion there a myriad of products available to apply much better than cosmolene.

One of these days if I'm really bored I'll spend some time cleaning off some of my cosmoline... They undersides do look much better afterwords.
I already purchased some of this, which evidently is one of the better cosmoline removers (though perhaps stupidly overpriced at $40 for 8oz)

What products do you use to clean under there?

used basic cleaners, mineral spirits, portable steam machine etc,
I removed cosmolene and detailed back in 2002 just after taking delivery. Easy to remove when new. Longer you wait the more difficult to remove. Once it gets backed in virtually impossible to restore finish. It’s actually easy to maintain once it’s detailed.
