Default ABS PSM Fault 4440 Steering Angle Sensor HELP!!!

Hey everybody! I have a new to me 2001 996TT. I bought the car knowing it had this fault thinking I could fix it. I have the newest Durametric and the code 4440 comes up. I have the ABS and PSM light on and my ABS doesn't work due to this I think along with PSM i assume. I have tried to use the Durametric to calibrate the steering angle sensor with no success. I am now trying to troubleshoot to see if in fact the sensor is bad. I cannot find a diagram to tear into the steering column to find the plug to test the terminals. I do have the testing procedure from the workshop manual but thats about it. This has been very frustrating as I like all things to work correctly and it's gotta be fixed. I appreciate anyone's help!

There has to be a procedure out there for removal and replacement in a workshop manual somewhere. I don’t want to take my wheel off unless I have to. I’ve taken the plastic cover off to get into wiring but before I go any further and do unnecessary work I’m hoping someone can help.

Hello. I just bought the same car and also have this problem. Took it to the garage today, got a wheel alignment, and reset of the sensor, but it did not work. They suggested to replace the sensor, but that is more than USD1500 with parts. Did you get yours resolved in any way?? Anyone else that have have experience replacing the sensor??

No I haven't been able to find a solution. I have scoured the web looking for a workshop procedure with no luck. I've found a sensor testing procedure but no information as to tear down the steering column to get to the sensor. I have found new steering angle sensors for 600 which is fine to get this fixed but I'm reluctant to go in there blind. I just drive it as it is for now but I have no PSM or ABS. I'd rather not pay a shop to fix this when I know I am capable. Although I have been considering it lol

Unfortunately I haven't. I've posed this question on all forums with a 996 turbo section and haven't found the answer. Since I am done driving for the winter, I'm going to pull the steering wheel off and dig in until I find the sensor. I'll test it, as I have found a description as to diagnose a sensor failure or wiring problem. All I was hoping to find is a diagram as to where the sensor is and how far I need to take things apart. I will update with what I find so if someone else has this problem it may help.

The steering angle sensor on the TT lives at the base of the console bolted to the transmission tunnel ahead of the shifter.

got it - if the 265s are on an 11 inch wheel they are most likely stretched and you may have a big enough discrepancy in diameter of wheels front and rear which will cause havoc with the PSM due to AWD.

Thanks... this is a 2000 rwd cabriolet.
Started having the issue after a dead battery and battery replacement.
I've cleaned the MAF, replaced the brake pedal switch, and tried calibrating the steering sensor w/ Durametric
ABS and PSM lights always on and the only code I get is 4440.

Did you do the troubleshooting as per diagnostic manual?

the voltages check OK. My next step is to take it to the dealer for steering sensor calibration if there is nothing else I can try on my own...
