Default Question for tip owners

I already searched but didn’t find the answer I was looking for so I’ll put it out here.
Can the tip be reprogrammed to where it starts in first gear even in normal driving without having to flip it down to first every time. I understand why it was done but I don’t like having to flip it down at every stop light.
How many have had there’s reprogrammed and how do you like it since?

As far as I know no one has bothered to remap the TCU to start off in 1st gear.

Why do you down shift into first at every stop light?

Default Tip

You apparently can't reprogram them like you can a BMW. EvoMS does a $1000 mod but it doesn't affect town driving. Shame, this transmission could do a lot more.

I don’t always shift it to first, but it just seems to be smoother leaving a light or any stop in first than in second..
maybe one of the tuners will chime in on this.

its a m/b 4matic trans. paramount or southern hot rods transmission shop can build them from mild to wild.

Explain what you mean by smoother?

Maybe wrong word to use.
it just feels like it pulls away from a light, stop sign whatever using first gear with little effort and second is no effort either, but I just like how first gear feels and pulls. I have been driving manual transmission cars so long that I feel this should start in first too.
I am going to do the TCU reprogram just because it makes sense from what I have read about it.
Oh and yes I am glad I bought a tip car, no regrets.
I would like to see it shift and use ALL the gears and I think it would be even more fun.

In my MB, there is a C/S button which stands for Comfort/Sport, where it starts from 2nd or 1st gear respectively. My understanding is they did that for mpg. Is there a button like this on the 996?

Fair enough.

The trans in your car is a Mercedes unit known as a 722.6 5G-Tronic. They are very common, you should able to find a tuner that can make the TCU do what you want.

When you have it done please post your impressions of the improvements.

My MB has the C/S system. I keep in in the sport mode.

Since the Tip starts out in 1st when the engine is cold, I suspect it'd be easy to 'trick' the trans into full time first gear starts.

Until then, you'll have the heavy burden of flicking the Tip switch at stoplights.

I am adding to the "I love the Tiptronic" . It pulls like a freight train and seems to never run out of power. I'm going on 4 weeks of ownership and use manual shifting a lot. Also ordered the DCMT paddle shift wheel conversion last week. Can't wait. Would anyone please let me know if my shifting in manual will hurt anything? When I'm PLAYING around in M mode, I try to time my upshift button pressing, throttle lifting, and gear change, in a way that makes for a relatively quick shift to the net higher gear. I didn't want the expense of the 6 speed clutch replacement as I already have a car the eats expensive clutches. So I'm kind of driving this like a manual. Thanks for any input. By the way, I don't think it's a big deal to thumb press for 1st gear when you want it.

No need to lift throttle with upshifts. Lifting will actually confuse the TCU, just pull the paddle.

Manual shifting will not hurt the trans. The enemy of slush box autos, and any trans in general, is heat. If you drive it hard cruise around at low revs for a couple of miles to let everything cool off.

The Tip is supposed to have a 2 speed reverse. Never figured how to engage the second speed..

From what I have read the second reverse gear is only accessible with cars that have a sport/comfort button.

Daytonaman did you get your car issue straightened out?
