Default 996tt 1mph faster in reverse vs 1st?

I just picked up my 2003 996tt from the shop today, after having the following work done:

1.) Transmission complete rebuild w/ same gear ratios
2.) RS clutch
3.) LMFW Aluminum
4.) BBI clutch slave conversion
5.) 997 short shifter & shifter cables
6.) Semi-solid engine mountsi
7.) Semi-solid transmission mount
8.) New wheel bearings

When I went to drive it, reverse felt a lot faster than before and faster than first gear. I took it back to the shop and sure enough, after my mechanic gave a strange look, he confirmed that the car was 1mph faster in reverse than 1st gear. The guy that rebuilt the transmission was also at the shop and was unable to figure out why this was happening.

Has as anyone experienced this when changing out the dual mass fly wheel? Any thoughts? It just does not make mechanical sense.

Items 4 through 8 are not in question, but included to capture the whole job.

Maybe your wheel sensors aren’t calibrated correctly, I’ve owned over 75 cars and can honesty say that I have never tested a comparison between forward and reverse maximum speed with any of them.

I know you probably just spent a ton of $, but does 1 mph in reverse really matter?

It also feels significantly faster in reverse and faster than before I had the work done.

How fast will it go in reverse, it does 42 mph in first?

At that speed there is almost a 25% difference. It makes it difficult to back out of parking spaces without launching into traffic and at these speeds difficult to back up into tight spots or onto a trailer. At idle it’s 7mph in reverse and 1st 6mph. 1mph may not seam like a lot, until your behind the wheel (I would have had the same reaction that you did, until I experience it).

I am sorry I misunderstood your problem. I was thinking since you had the transmission rebuilt, the speedometer was off by 1mph in reverse. I didn’t realize it was actually going faster in reverse. It appears to me Somehow the gear ratio or engine rpm has changed in reverse causing the vehicle speed to increase.

I can understand your concern.

I just wanna know where you hit top speed of first while in reverse! Lol

Agree also.. if truly so, your gears got swapped upon re install. Best guess.

Have you driven a car with a lightweight flywheel before?

To whom are you asking the question?

Thanks for asking. No. This is my first experience driving a with a LMFW. I was also told by my mechanic that all of the transmission/gear noise (very loud compared to stoc. It sounds like your tenth rattling) was probably due to the elimination of the dual mass flywheel. The sound does not bother me but was concerned that all was ok. He said that was the reaction from everyone that had this mod.
