Final price including premium is $50,600. Not too shabby for a 55k mile Tip.

I thought the buyer pays the premium, not the seller.
Barret-Jackson has a 8% Sellers premium. There is also an healthy entry fee on top. Plus 10% Buyers premium.

Mecum has a 10% Sellers premium on reserve cars, 5% Sellers premium on no-reserve cars. Plus a $350 - $1,000 entry fee (eg: $1,000 if you want Saturday afternoon). Plus 10% Buyers premium. Actually the Buyers premium goes to 12% if your a phone or internet bidder!

I think most of the other auction houses are pretty similar, and I believe they will negotiate down the Sellers premium on sellers doing volume, liquidating collections, have extremely special cars that will create lots of interest, etc.

Bingo! That is it exactly. I used to have business dealings with a number of independent wholesale auction owners accross the USA and whenever the subject of these collector car auctions came up they would just shake their heads in disbelief of what these guys were charging. I think you can understand how Craig Jackson can stand out there with the bidders and pay $1.1M for that special Mustang.
