Buying Advice

There is a 2001 996tt for sale in my area for $31k. I currently have a Boxster S that I have had for 3.5 years but looking to upgrade. I have driven the Turbo twice and everything works and it drives flawlessly. It has 105k miles. Interior is like new, paint is good as well. Porsche dealer did a lot of work at 89,000 miles: Brakes, CV boots, control arms, engine mounts, all fluids changed, etc. and then sold the car. I would think a Porsche dealership wouldn't sell a car if it wasn't sorted out, but I could be wrong. It is a Tip car but that's ok with me. I'd have a PPI done, of course. If everything comes back good how do people feel about buying these cars with over 100k miles? Is it worth spending $10-15k more for a lower mileage car? I don't plan on driving more than 4k miles a year as I work from home and have a family van for kids stuff and hauling things, so this would be my fun car. I don't want to buy a potential money pit either.
Thanks in advance,
David

IMO yes.

no matter the mileage these cars are getting older every day. rubber degrades rust starts and leather cracks. buy clean and drive it

my only concern for a car this age and with the benz tip transmission is what has or has never been serviced in 100k miles.

in a manual, that's just about the time to be concerned/address worn pinion bearings etc. i know less about tips. but that would be my ONLY concern. other than that, with proper maintnenance, the cars good for 300k miles, easy. 4k miles a year? make that 400k lol.

Seems a very tempting deal to me, but then I bought my current Turbo with 108K miles on it.

You may be looking at coolant fittings needing pinning/welding at that age/mileage, but the Tip is good for another 80K miles, probably, and the engine, 100K+ more. As 32Krazy! says, there are a lot of rubber hoses that will need replacing about now. You'll also likely want to replace/update suspension bushings.

Do you have any pictures of the interior?

The spoiler is up. Check and make sure it is not leaking. About 2k for repair or replacement.

Yeah, this was from me messing with it - thanks!

If it was a six-speed, I would say grab it before someone else does... But then again, if it was a six speed, it would already be gone! ;-)

Fixed your post.

OP did you end up purchasing this?

derrunner 01-10-2019 06:48 PM

Yes, I actually picked it up today. Owner let me take it for a couple days while I got the PPI - so I had a chance to get to know it and drive it for quite a bit. Probably took over 3 weeks from 1st test drive to finally purchasing, though.

Well congrats! I was the other guy looking at it, but decided to go with a manual. Enjoy your new ride.
