Shop has had time to dig into engine, and they are positive engine block is cracked as it will not hold coolant/water. So forgive me for my ignorance what are my options? I filed a claim with insurance due to road debris I ran over at time of failure. Used engine, cut my losses sell as a roller? Kinda overwhelmed here.

Not sure I understand this - Did you drive for awhile with no coolant? Did you over rev? a coolant neck coming out usually isn't a recipe for an engine write off. The Mezger engine is pretty robust, even when abused. Mine blew (a coolant fitting) while on the way to the back straight at Sebring - I monitored the coolant level and temps - and coasted back into the pits - car never got hot - coolant level only showed low once I stopped the car.

BTW - very sorry to hear this - but also never heard of a cracked Mezger engine block

I have a hard time believing the block is cracked, maybe a cylinder. There is a complete engine on eBay with 10K miles for $18.5K. Also, Norspecdismantling has one for $13K.

This engine is not a water cooled engine! It has water cooled heads AND water cooled cylinder liners. The bottom end or engine case is oil cooled, This is verified by the 964 engine case that you will see and can verify!
So, yes you might have a cracked head, and a cracked cylinder jacket.. Maybe both, but they can be replaced and rebuilt!

I agree, it doesn't make sense.

Maybe head gasket blew then the pressure crossed over into the coolant system and that blew the coolant fitting?

FIRST thing to do is pick up your car and find a shop that actually knows how this motor is designed. a cracked block due to coolant leak is near impossible. cracked head, cracked cylinder liner yes . you need toi find a shop pull the motor and do a tear down to see whats really going on. from that point you can decide what to do. for the price of most used engines you can do a full rebuild with better rods and studs and keep the matching # to the car and know exactly what you have had done. used engine gets you a 90 warranty at most

I remember seeing a used engine in the recent past offered at $10k. Just FYI. The car is definitely worth saving.

need to find a shop that knows what they're talking about
any coolant in oil, or oil in coolant? physically leaking outside of the engine?
