5k to pull engine and prep parts for welding. Does not include welding for that 5k. Does that sound reasonable?

If you google this you will find several write-ups on how to pin all 8 fittings. There is a good one from 6speedonline forum dated 8/20/2015.

Sounds high. $5k should be the total price, welding included. Offer to pay cash.

I believe you do not track this car? If that is correct, and I were you I would re-glue the pipe and drive on.

Never tracked it, nor plan too. Simply a weekend car with tune and 41,000 miles.

I had the same thing happen to my 996TT Cab. I wasn't planning on getting married to a car that's not going to the track anytime soon, so I just JB welded it back in. It was very visible and easy, the one behind the alternator. My indie advised me this likely will only last a year in his experience before blowing again, but I'm willing to gamble since I have two 996TTs and AAA premiere.

My protips on the matter are completely remove the failed pipe, wire-brush it spotless, thoroughly clean it and the corresponding mating surface with IPA, roughen up the surface a little bit so the epoxy can weld, then apply JB weld liberally to both surfaces, lock it in, wait a long-*** time for it to cure fully (I waited over 48 hours), then pressure test with a vacuum lift to refill the coolant system.

Did they drop the engine? That sounds like a good deal.

Just talking off the top of my head, but $5k+ seems high. I thought this was closer to a $3,000 fix.

I had 993GT drop my engine and tranny, replace the clutch and pin the lines. I think it took him about 23 hours all in. So yeah 5k US seems excessive. I have heard of shops charging 8k for this. They are praying on people's fears and overcharging IMO.
If anybody is near Toronto and needs this done, I would talk to Rob as his attention to detail is excellent and he is very reasonable and experienced with these engines.

Yes, full engine drop. They've done over 20. McIlvain Motors in Tempe, AZ, pretty much late model Porsche only shop, though I occasionally see and Audi or Benz, but not often. They do all the heavy lifting on my GT3 and 996TT, although ironically I have not had the Turbo lines pinned yet, as the car has only 19k miles on it and the engine has never been out.

Great guys and a full-transparency shop.

So they got car put back together and now car has coolant coming out of exhaust. They seem to think it may be a head gasket failure. I won’t know anymore until shop owner takes a look at on Monday. Not the news I was looking to get. Sounds like I have an exspensive problem.

was the engine overheated, once you noticed the blown coolant line?

Yes, I was in the middle of passing a semi on two lane highway so I drove maybe 1/4 mile until I could safely pass and find a secure spot to stop.

I guess if it got hot enough, it could of crack the heads, but only going 1/4 mile, it’s hard to say. Good luck, sorry this happened to you.
