New 2001 Turbo Owner
Hi guys,
New 996 Turbo owner over here. The car needs tires. It has 285/30R18 and 225/40R18 on it now. I'm looking online at Tire rack and they are telling me the car came with "295"/30R18. Which tire to order, the same size that are on there now, or the size they say should be on there? Will 295 fit on a rim that has 285 on it now? Appreciate any advice...

Nice car.
225/40R18 and 295/30R18 are the OEM stock tire sizes. Go with those, they will fit on the OEM wheels perfectly.

I used to use these on 8" front and 10" wide rear wheels.

Check your date codes on the sidewalls...if those fronts are more than 5 years old, I'd simply ditch them and get 4 fresh new tires. There are plenty of choices, from the budget Sumitomos to the gold standard Michelin PS2s to more aggressive Yokohamas. How you plan to drive the car should dictate tire choice. If you're just looking to cruise around you really can't go wrong with the Michelins.
You can then sell the take off tires on Craig's List and call it day.
Welcome aboard!

Congrats on the ride. So as you now know, your car has the wrong size tires out back. Perhaps the previous owner wanted a particular brand that didn't come in 295/30 or they simply got sold tires that 'should' work. At any rate, nobody here runs 285s out back. They're even shorter than the 24.9 / 25.0" tall 295/30s. Oh, and you may not know this, but our cars were designed to work with a slightly shorter rear tire.
