Default Sluggish/Repeated Start, High Idle RPM

Hi All,

Car is 2002 996 Turbo and 100K miles.

Recently it's difficult to crank-start the car. It would take more than 10 seconds or repeated-tries to start the engine. Once the engine is started, its idle RPM is a bit higher than normal, which is like 1K rpm and above; normal is 800 RPM. Car drives normal afterwards, except higher than usual RPM constantly and no warning lights.

This happens randomly and intermittently, either engine hot or cold.

After driving a few hundred feet or a few minutes, if I try to stop-and-restart the engine, it becomes normal; no start difficulty and normal idle RPM.

Any ideas please?

Thanks!

Start with cleaning the maf and do an E gas reset. Both are easy and free to do. Report back after.

How old is the battery?

Yes, look at the MAF. For a quick check just unplug it and start the car. Also check/listen for a vacuum leak.

fluctuating idle is more often than not. simply a bad MAF. so much so, i r&r it, then seek other issues out. never needed to.

add: i NEVER clean mafs or kitchens.
