Default original 1000-mile K16 turbines or rebuilt ones?

Car is 2002 996 turbo and 100K miles.

I think I have a leaking turbine seal, oil of 500cc has been found in one of the intercooler, when new coils were installed. I come across a supposedly slightly used turbines that were removed and kept in storage with 1000 miles on them for over 15 yrs and then the rebuilt ones. Which is a better pick if prices are $1300, about the same for either. how easily can seals go bad, simply by sitting in storage?

And... is leaking oil a big issue? I hv no idea how long it took to come to 500cc in the intercooler. The car drives fine. The boost builds up to 0.6 fairly fast. but 0.7 is harder and much longer time. (I remember seeing 0.8, but that was long, long time ago. LOL)

Any advices would be appreciated!!

I'd take the near new 1000 mile set ant day of the week. Personally I would take them apart, polish the turbine shaft and put them back together and run them.. Can't beat a 1000 mile>>just broke in set.

Hi Kevin, I assume there's a seal between the two ends of the turbines. Does that mean it can be taken apart and re-seal? Gee... I have no idea.

used k16 turbos typically run about 600$ a set not 1000$ low mileage one would get you a few extra bucks but not 400

yes, you can reseal the new turbochargers, including the one on your car.

I wouldn't rush into a turbo rebuild just yet, you can easily monitor the oil leakage past the turbocharger. Is it the left hand Bank 1 turbocharger? If it is>>pull the turbo to intercooler hose and monitor the oil accumulation each week. Post your results.

Note: the oil reservoir breather vent dumps oil into the left side intake..

Agree. I wouldnt jump to conclusion that you need to replace.

would be good to drive the car a bit and then chexk the lower hoses going into the intercoolers.

disconnect and take a paper towel and wipe inside one of your hoses to see if your still have oil transferring.

if and when you do decide to change them, try sambo and look into K16/68’s.

very happy.

HI Kevin, if you look at the engine from the rear, it's the left side of intercooler. The other side is dry. I posted this a while ago, some member suggested the leak from the seal. But you'r saying it could be the breather vent? <<< what is this?

If you remove the hose from the turbocharger high pressure side that goes to the intercooler>> there is oil or there isn't oil.. If there is oil clean the oil up with brake wash and re-check in a week of driving. Make sure that your engine oil is 2 to 3 bar levels down from the highest level.
If the turbocharger continues to leak 2 or 3 tablespoons of oil each week>> you can purchase the 1000 mile turbochargers and refit the turbocharger right away. Just get it fixed and enjoy driving!!

Not to hijack, but do you recommend this policy in general?
