Laying a surface bead will work.just as someone said use a bias wrench when breaking the drain plug loose and tightening. The weld is not under any real stress, so i bet a bead will work.

This is a fracture or split. I have replaced a oil tank with a very similar issue. 32Crazy is correct, you will need to remove from the engine and clean before welding or brazing. You don't want the oil to carbonize and get pushed into the engine.
Inert gas should be used to purge the tank. The fracture that I seen was in the corrugation. I just opted to replace the tank vs risk heat induced stress fractures.

I happen to have a used 996 Turbo oil tank if you decide to replace it. Was mislabeled as a 997 Turbo tank on eBay and by the time I got around to the job and noticed it was way too late to send it back.

Do you think this is how it cracked?

Hmmm...now that you mention it. I did took the car to the dealer for an oil change prior to the excessive leak. I knew it was leaking but never this bad. It got worse after the oil change. The car sat for a week after the oil change and that's when I notice the oil on the garage floor. Prior to that the car never left a stain on the floor. I don't think I'll go back. I usually do my own oil change. But I was hoping the dealer can catch something with Porsche world class routine visual check up. They didn't even catch oil around the tank (smh). I figured if they didn't mention it, it's normal.

Its an engine out procedure so there's usually more things done while the engine is out

Thanks. Now is the time to order my Kline system and change the spark plugs. What other critical item do I need to address when the engine is out? I want to do everything all at once when the engine is out for the first time. Don't want to have any trouble down the line.
