Default What is the best speaker configuration

I did not know that my car has subs in the doors and rear deck. I planned to put tweeters in the dash and 5.25 in doors and 4" in the rear seat then maybe go with a powered subcompact sub. I plan to run all with a 5 channel amp. What do you guys recommend? I like to listen to very loud music. Do u really need subs in the doors and in the rear? Where is the sub amp?

I can't answer any aftermarket audio questions; however, I will encourage you to take care of your hearing.

You'd probably get more answers on the regular 996 forum or a car audio forum. However, as a 996TT owner and car audio enthusiast, I'll take a crack.
  1. Most of what you read about car audio is hogwash. Most "car audio" products are highly marked up ripoffs.
  2. To answer your question, you don't need rear speakers (I say this as a general car audio rule, not specific to the 996TT). There are people on the Internet who might disagree with this, but they're wrong.
  3. The typical car audio layout of small format tweeter up high with a 5-6" midrange in the door requires a crossover in the 2-4kHz range, exactly where our ears are most sensitive. All kinds of nasty wave interference happens when the tweeters are far away from the mids, and your head is also moving all over the place and never in the "sweet spot" of sound. Our cars can fit 4" midrange in the dash. Therefore:
  4. I highly recommend running a 3 or 4" midrange/fullrange/coax/4" component set in the dash. It's a total waste to use that space only for a 1" tweeter. And keep the doors for midbass duty, with a much lower crossover.
All I've done in my 996TT is to swap the factory Bose dash speakers for some low-impedance 4" JBL coax that the stock Bose amp can drive OK. If I were doing a full build personally, I would find some legit midbass drivers on partsexpress.com or madisound.com (that's where you can buy the raw drivers that car audio brands are marking up 10x), and throw them in the stock door enclosures (after sealing/deadening them a bit). I'd probably try to re-use the stock sub enclosure somehow, as well, or swap it out altogether. A 5-channel amp would work for that or a similar setup.

Lastly, I have to +1 Dock: part of the reason I'm not into car audio as much as I used to be, and I'm actually considering putting my aftermarket exhaust back to stock on the TT, is that I have tinnitus from lots of loud concerts and loud car audio in previous cars. I had read about hearing loss/tinnitus on the forums, but never realized tinnitus meant that you have a ringing in your ears 100% of the time -- until I had a ringing in my ears 100% of the time. You gotta enjoy those pleasures, just be smart about it.

Thanks for the advice. Are the door speaker wires at amp connector connected to any other wires before getting to the amp? I am running new dash wire and rear speaker wire but the door wire I just can't figure out how to get past the loom between the door and the frame. I plan to use a self powered sub.

peel back the rubber boot. you will see the electrical connector for the door electronics. you can use the spare holes on the pass side. d/s will need to be a little creative and dremel alongside the cionnector. i use a fish tape to feed the wires

i have spare door speaker boxes if you want to upgrade to 6.5" and keep your original boxes

Thanks. I will use the existing wire on the inside of the boot and run my own wires from there. running new wire for the rest is a piece of cake.

Will do once I am done. This is my first 911 Turbo and only had a chance to drive it for less than an hour before jumping into this project. I had the bose with NAV. Is there a park switch connection I can tap into on one of the connectors that were plugged into my PCM 2 unit? Illumination connection off of the lighter? Pin out # for the 12V switched?

I used those jbl gto series speakers on my cdr220 and they sound horrible. Was very disappointed. They distort on high volume if the music has any bass. That’s with the bass at -7!

originally I ordered the JBL's but when I noticed they were low wattage speakers and I like to listen to very loud music I went with an 80+ w speakers.

So a 80+ watt speaker will fair well with the stock cdr220?
