Would really be helpful if we knew what part of the country you're in, (weather / temps / etc).

For great dry weather / warm temp grip, with decent road noise;
  • Michelin PS 4 if you can get the right sizes
  • Hankook RS-4 if you can get the right sizes
have fun

In another thread, several of us contacted Michelin to request the Pilot Sport 4S in 295/30/18. I think it's in all of our interest and we'd all appreciate it.

For a commuter with a budget, the Sumitomos may be a good choice, I've ridden in a car with them and they had good grip, but I cannot comment on whether or not they get loud as they wear.
AD08s are GREAT tyres for warm / dry weather grip. They are also great DE day tyres due to rubber compound / construction and STIFF sidewalls. Those same stiff sidewalls = increased NVH if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Sumitomo? Just say no IMO.

Cheers

A052?
They come in 245/40 and 315/30 for $1,100, they'd be on their way to try if I didn't have lots of tread on my Michelins.
Anyone run these hard and have feedback?

Totally agree, I will not run Sumis. I know everyone's use case is different, but I need a sticky tire that's not too loud. By loud I meaning "howling loud".

8-10K miles is all I want, that's 2-3 years.

I don't need a 15-20K mile tire like those who daily drive their Turbos.

I discussed the PS4S tires in stock sizes for our turbos with the Michelin rep at the Werks Reunion. Don't hold your breath for these. Last year they said next year, this year they said several years. Sound like maybe never. He did say that they would never discontinue the PS2 without releasing something better in our sizes.

Good grief. It's only 1-2 sizes we need, 295 and 315/30/18 as they already make the fronts.

I'd be happy with either PS4 or the Super Sports :-(

My Pirelli PZero Rosso' are nice here in Florida, Porsche Sized, and work very well. Not tried Falken's but I would. Sumitomo's, as I said above, no thanks! I have also had Bridgestone RE050's at one point, nice tired but SOFT! I am in Florida, so I need some wet weather grip. My car is a street car too, no track days. I am very confident that the PZero’s would be more than enough in the GA Mountains though.

My all time favorite street tire.....Mich Pilot SuperSport (PSS). Shame they are not available for our cars.

I am currently running Bridgestone SO2's, as the Michelin rears in stock sizing were on indefinite back order when I needed new tires early last year. The SO2's are pretty quiet, and they have good grip and front end bite -- much less understeer on the street than the Hankooks they replaced. I will buy another set of Bridgestone rears when these wear out. I will probably try a full set of PS2's at some point for comparison.

I'd be happy with the auto-x cheater tires. I wish we could get the RE71R's in the size we need

Care to direct us to that thread? Is there a specific point of contact being used? I'd be happy to write a letter to encourage this.

I just joined the 996 Turbo club in July (2002 Seal Gray over Black) and installed the General G-Max RS tires in stock sizes. I have been quite pleased with them, but I imagine I could be driving on Flintstone tires and happy during this honeymoon phase!
Sorry I haven't made the "new guy" post yet - so much to say and so little time, plus I don't want to get shredded for crappy iPhone pics.
Interesting side note - I originally wanted the Sumitomos, but my installer would not put them on because the load index on the rears is lower than Porsche recommends (94 vs 98).
Best of luck in your search!

Congrats on the car. You appear to be the first to be running the General tires. Keep up posted on how they grip, perform, wear, and sound.
