Exhaust on your 996TT
#46
For upgraded cars (Stage 3+) you will need 3" and 100 cells. Otherwise you will limit the power via backpressure. 3 " M&M 100 cell x-pipe. The exhaust isnt loud. I wanted it as quite as it can be.

CA Smog test is very difficult. The way the law is if you do anything different to the exhaust you might not pass smog. IT does state that you can do post cat mufflers but it also states that if the car sounds different than stock it can fail. You need to find the right guy. Our 200 cell cats will pass the sniffer test in CA but the system will not pass visual because we do not have a Smog Certification. .

The way I have interpreted the law is it is for the entire state but it seems to be regionally different. The bay area and above mostly do not have visual checks while the La area has on the road checks where cops check under your vehicle.

What do you like about it ?
Considering this system, watched the youtube videos, certainly sounds great. Curious what others think about Soul for their 996 TT...

I really love the system. Probably have 5K miles on it since install. It has mellowed a bit and settled into it's end-state.
It amplifies and concentrates the GT wail that these motors are capable of.
From my perspective, it's not noise developed through manipulated air as much as it is uncorking and putting the motor on an aural pedestal.
At highway speed it's flawless - it quiets down and is nary an annoyance.
under medium and hard acceleration, it's outrageous. Very loud (not straight pipe loud), I must say. But as I said, it's not just noise being vomited ephemerally into your immediate presence. It's very much Porsche, invokes thoughts of a 996 GT3 bypass. It has a similar focused grunt that Cup cars make. Just not quite the banshee-level, but it's surprised even my most experienced Porschefile friends. Added serious turbo spool too, which gives it a dimension unique to our Mezgers.
There is drone under 2.5K, but the extent is subjective. It's more than tolerable to me (and avoidable in most situations), but I do hesitate at those unavoidable times with less enthusiast-minded passengers - think shifting into third on a slow uphill at 35-40mph or a light turns green as you're about to stop in 2nd hear but instead lug the motor a tiny bit to pull away at 10-15mph).
Cold starts are magnificent. There's also a video of that youtube.
The car is simply more alive. It sounds fantastic, throttle response is more immediate with the new cats, and and it's a lot lighter than stock. What else can I tell you about it?

That's my car, FYI. Unfortunately, you really need to hear it in person and on the road.

Sounds exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks for the detailed over-view. Super impressed with the build quality and everyone @ Soul has been great.

I bought an FVD exhaust for $300 from craigslist from a guy who wanted to return to stock. Polished it up, slapped it on, sounds great. Not too droney, not too loud.
If anyone wants a stock exhaust let me know.

With all this talk about sound/drone, etc. I thought I would chime in with some thoughts and experience from a lot of 996TT exhaust R&D. We developed the first commercially available X-Pipe for the 996TT that I knew of at the time, about 10 years ago. Originally, we produced a twin can 996TT system that had a fair amount of drone, but much less than the majority of what was being offered at the time. It had decent sound, but I envisioned a better all around product. So.....I personally began testing the X-Pipe principal on the 996TT. It had been used in previous generation NA 911's and current normally aspirated 911's, but not on the turbo cars. I tested numerous "X" designs, moving the pipes apart both vertically and horizontally and live testing each iteration. Each variation had a different tone and drone attributes. We had several drivers provide feedback on each style. Then we went to tip design. I designed and tested over 20 different tip shapes and sizes. Again, every tip changed the sound and drone level. And again, everyone test drove the various tips and provided feedback. To make a long story short, we took the best sounding, least droning X-Pipe and paired it with the best sounding, least droning tip design (SE Tips) and that became our core 996TT exhaust (the twin can generation 1 system was discontinued). The newer X-cellerator X-Pipe system was offered and is still available in 3 versions, a quiet, a moderate and a full 3" loud. We do offer a few other tip designs, such as re-use OEM or dual tips, but always recommend our SE (sound engineered) tips, as they provide the best sound attributes we have ever heard and have ever been able to achieve. Some of the other tip designs we tested and scrapped sounded horrible by comparison (we actually see some very similar on many systems). With our quieter systems, there is virtually no drone, especially the 2.5 X-Pipe. We learned how to create a high pitched wail that moves the frequency out of the deeper, bass-like drone range and provides an epic driving experience. More like an Italian exotic. After hearing and experiencing many of the X-Pipes available today, it is my opinion that most of these companies offering X-Pipes have not done their homework (R&D), as some of them actually do not sound that good and/or have horrendous drone. I think some of the companies producing them don't have a shop car to test with, they just make something to fit and hope for the best, sometimes trying to improve with each sale and relying on customer feedback. We have had many, many customers switch from other X-Pipes due to excess drone, only to be ecstatic once installing the SpeedTech. I have also experimented quite a bit with helmholtz resonators and personally was not happy with their effect on the sound of our system. On our system, they brought out more of the deeper tone I mentioned above and took away the attributes that make our system what we want it to be. That is the reason we have not integrated them to our design—we have achieved better without them. We are very pleased with our higher pitched, GT3 type sound characteristics and feel we have reached the pinnacle of what we can do for Porsche 996TT exhaust sound. Footnote: Our shop 996TT car was purchased new in 2002, and has 152,000 miles of exhaust testing....In general, I have lived 996TT exhaust design, probably more so than any other Porsche exhaust designer. If anyone has any questions regarding 996TT exhausts, please feel free to contact me. I know it very well....

I have John's system, and agree with his comments... lively and livable, the way a well thought out exhaust should be.
