Traqmate mounting and wiring?
 

Anyone using one of these? I took it out of my last track car and would like to use it.

I want to mount it in a way that's easy to install and remove as I won't leave it in place outside of track days.

I need to grab a switched power and good ground for it, then come up with a way to mount the display.

What could I use that would hold it on top of the cubbies in front of the shifter? Some kind or ram mount?

I don't know squat about the traqmate, but a really convenient place to pick up switched power, un-switched power, and ground is from the wired phone connector, installed and unused on virtually every 996. It looks like the dangling harness in the picture below. The side panels on the lower console just pop off and you should be able to find it without fishing around too much.

Brown = Ground
Red / Green = Switched 12 volts
Green / Black = Unswitched 12 volts
Yellow / Black = Telephone Mute

Perfect. Now I have to figure out a way to mount the display that's secure but easily installed/removable.

Maybe a RAM mount....

how big is the display? theres a few stick on magnet mounts for cell fones that have amazing magnets. the ones i have are really small and could be stuck to the windshield or console and theres a small metal plate that sticks to the dislay. pops on and off in seconds

It's probably about the same size as the Nokia non flip cell phones were back in the very late '90's early '00's. I bet a cell phone magnet mount would work really well, thanks!

I use magnetic mounts in all my cars for cell phones, they work great.

On the turbo it's a bit difficult to find a flat surface at the right angle to attache the mount to though. One thing I tried that worked out really well was to stick one of those 360 mounts onto the flat end of a low profile cigarette receptacle USB adapter. You loose the utility of the lighter and plug ('im hardwired on my radar and cell phone carplay anyway), but it's in a great spot and holds remarkably well. Not sure if this would be sturdy enough for your traqmate, but works great for something as large as my iPhone 8 plus.

This is similar to what the mag mount is stuck to... Doesn't have to be USB of course, it was just something I had lying around that fit securely into the cigarette lighter plug and had a flat mounting surface.

What's the part number for the connector plug into that harness? That way I can solder it into the harness of the traqmate and plug/unplug it cleanly as needed....

Probably not an easily available part, I've never seen a part number for it, and I don't know that you'll easily find any sort of matching connector at a place like digikey either.

Either cut it off completely and install your own male/female quick disconnect or tap into the wires without cutting off the oem connector and put your own quick disconnect downstream.

Ok, just tapped into that phone harness. I verified it had power before I started. After I tapped it, no power! Not only that, but my radio comes on and only flashes "Porsche", no sound out of it at all. I've checked the fuses and everything is fine.

WTF just happened and how do I fix it? At the very least I want my radio sound back...

Sure sounds like you might have blown a fuse, check the fuses again?
Which wire did you tap into?
What ground did you use?
How much current does your traqmate device pull?
Obvious, but have you disconnected whatever you rigged to the harness?

Not sure which specific fuse is for that harness, but specifically check:
D 8, 9, 10
E 1, 6, 8

Found it! Fuse E-6 was blown. Question is, do I attempt to hook the Traqmate up again? Fuse was a 7.5 amp, maybe use a 10 amp and hook up the Traqmate?

If it's just some electronic brain with a display, it really shouldn't be pulling more than an amp or two. Things like amplifiers, lights, horns, etc. can pull some current but if your traqmate is pulling more than 7.5A something is wrong.

My guess is that it is (wait for it) operator error... You shorted something out on your wiring. Double check everything, install the same size 7.5A fuse, and try again?

You can also put an ohm meter between the hot and neg wires of whatever your plugging into the phone wires and check the resistance, make sure it isn't a dead short.
