Default Smoke at start up...

So from time to time at Start up i get a cloud smoke but disappears several seconds later. Sometimes This happens sometime after I drive the car in the morning to work then when I leave work in the afternoon. So its not only when the car has been parked for days. I have a 2002 TT. Ive read that its pretty normal on Turbo cars. Is this true??

thanks

Normal. The motor is sideways.

It happens occasionally on this Turbo and my last one. This one has 56,000 and the first one had 28,000 miles.

Try letting it idle for 60 seconds before shutting it off. This seems to have made it so that my 2002 has not smoked for many starts.

mmmmm the idle cool-down seems to work for me, plus annual oil changes.

+1 on the idle cool-down.

I also switched from 0W40 to 5W40 and it seems to help.

i run M1 5-50. Just started getting the cold start rattle again that happens when parked in high temps. Its probably been over 110F in my garage every day for the last week. Did not happen all winter.

Normal, usually only happens when there are onlookers.

So on a related note, how much make-up oil are you guys adding between changes?

I would say at least 1/2 - 3/4 quart every 1,000 miles (Mobil 1 0-40). I'm going to pay closer attention after today's oil change (switching to 5-50).

I wait until the oil level will allow a single quart of oil to be added.

When I have more highway cruising miles, my oil consumption decreases. When I have more stop and go and "harder on the gas" miles, my oil consumption increases. I've kept detailed records since I purchsed the car new, and after switching to 5W50 the mileage between needing a quart of oil has been between ~1300 and ~2,300.

Since my last oil change, mine has gone down 1 bar on the measurement gauge in the last 1500 miles, so none as of yet. Did the oil change 10 months ago with Mobil 1 0w40 European, due in another 2 months (I change at 12mo./5000 miles whichever comes first).

+1 I think there is a “Bystander” sensor for this.

i said this on another thread. If I keep the oil at the top bar I get startup smoke almost every morning. If I keep it ~3 bars (3/4 qt.) low seldom get smoke. Maybe I just have a pessimistic gauge that causes me to over fill a little? It has been that way for the 12k miles that I have owned it, currently 28850 miles Motul 8100 5/40. Also occasionally get start up rattle sometimes, seems pretty normal for this Mezger engine. I’m happy with it.
