Default Trans Svc?

Hey Guys,

I’m inquiring about the interval for changing the trans fluid. My car is an ‘01 w/ 29k miles and has the original fluid. It was rarely driven prior to a year ago, I put about 7-8k miles on the car since 08/17. I sometimes experience an issue getting 3rd to engage with increased throttle. I believe it has to do with me throwing the gear a bit too far to the right on spirited drives. This appears to be common on the 996 and other models from what I read online. A good amount of people recommended replacing the shifter cables..

Regardless of the fact Porsche recommends changing the tranny fluid @ 90k miles. Is it ok to wait that long? I do not track my car and mostly highway miles. Any insight would be appreciated!

Cheers,

-Rob

Change the fluid now, 90k is entirely too long. Use Porsche fluid for best shift feel.

Definitely change the fluid.

Might also be worth re-adjusting the cables.

Thanks - i plan on getting the trans fluid swapped along with the engine oil @ 30k. I figured waiting to 90k is pushing it. I remember the days when MB told customers their trans fluid was good for a lifetime, it definitely came back to bite them.

Do you guys prefer Motul or Mobil 1? My mechanic recommended and replaced w/ Motul @ 25k. I feel it burns quicker than Mobil.

Do the front differential as well. I put Mobil1 Delvac into my trannie and front diff. It is the race fluid they use in factory GT3 cup cars. It feels a bit stiffer than what was in it. When cold, you have to be patient when shifting, but once warm, its fine. I can't give an opinion on Motul, but it seems like Porsche recommends the Mobil 1 suite of lubricants. When I changed mine, it was near 83000 miles. Way too long. The trannie fluid was as black as used motor oil. The magnetic drain plug had minimal deposits on it though. I used the Motiv power fill pump system https://www.motiveproducts.com/colle...-1-gallon-tank. Put the req'd amount in and opened the valve. Made it really easy. That plus a 2 post lift. BTW, the front diff fill plug can be a bit of a bitch to remove. The hex socket needs some solid positive pressure to prevent it from camming out. They must have a torque guerrilla putting the plug in.

Thx guys, I appreciate the feedback! Front differential added to the bucket list.

I need to find a trustworthy independent shop in the NOVA area. My local dealership thought I was crazy for wanting to change the coolant @ 23k. They tend to perceive things based on mileage and overlook the age which I feel is a factor to be considered. In addition to never recommending any type of preventative maintenance - a terrible business model and the svc advisors are clearly not incentivized.
