Default Absent Check Light?

Hey Guys,

I got lucky today, I live in Northern VA and we’re required to get an annual safety inspection. The inspector passed my car, but noticed one of my side marker bulbs was out. In most cases that equates to a fail.

My car (‘01 TT) never threw a check light, the original bulbs were swapped to amber years ago after updating to the Hella Euro smoked side markers. I installed new bulbs after the inspection and both sides are in working order. The cops will pull someone over for anything here!

Does this particular model no throw a check light if a side marker bulb is out?

Cheers,

-Rob

I don't think any bulbs trigger a dash warning light.

Do new cars do this? I've never had a car that did that, but I haven't bought a new car in a long time.

Thanks for the response Matt, I am interested to know if things maybe changed after the 996. I thought it might have something to do with me swapping them to amber bulbs and a potential lower voltage not triggering the check light.

The 997 and Cayenne appear to throw a check light for the side marker bulbs:

Oh, nice! Afraid the 996 is old school in this regard.

I honestly have no problem w/ it. I personally feel the newer cars are too over engineered. My old E55 would throw check lights for every single exterior bulb and most of the time they were in working order. In my neck of the woods it simply gives them a reason to throw on the lights and pull someone over.

I will now make it a point to check the exterior lights from time to time.

I recently went on a backroads drive with my local PCA, and had half a dozen members inform me that one of my rear running lights was out when we had a stop. Mildly embarrassing.

Funny you should say that. The guy that performed the inspection on my car today is a big time Porsche enthusiast. He almost immediately noticed my rear wiper arm cap was missing. I’ve owned my car for 11 years, I always thought it looked a bit off with the bolt showing but never thought twice about it. I felt like a proper **** when he called me out on it. Less than $8 for the genuine part on Pelican, I really look forward to installing it next week after 10+ yrs!
