Default cheap weight loss
Not sure many people know this, but the 996TT came from the factory with a stamped steel rear subframe cross member. It's rather heavy at 7 lbs. 10 oz. The 996GT2/3/Cup get a much lighter aluminum cross brace weighing 3 lbs. 12oz. amounting for a difference of almost 4 lbs from the back of the car. Not sure why the TT got the steel cross brace but likely due to some obscure crash regulation due to the weight of the car. Starting with the 997, all of the street cars get this lighter cross brace including 997Cups. As a result, there are a bunch of these on ebay for $50-70. Part number is 997.331.261.02. Cheap way to loose some weight and it looks much better too.

There is an anti-intrusion piece bolted to the bottom of the engine that lines up with the center of that'

Great idea, just bought one. Perhaps i will polish it up a bit before putting it on. A little undercarriage jewelry.

IMO that's not a bad place to have an extra 5-7 pounds hanging low like that.

Porsches opinion was that the 996GT2/3/Cup and all 997s afterward get them. I think Porsche is probably on to something.

Nice budget hack for 996 Turbo owners! If they hadn't made it standard on basic 997's, it would be some $800 Porsche Motorsports part! :-)

The only thing I can figure is some type of crash requirement back in those days due to the vehicle weight or the awd system. Interestingly the steel brace is about 4x the price of the aluminum one. The steel one is about $800 at the dealer.

Any weight removed from the back of the 911 is a good thing. Shifting it to the front is even better. That is one of the benefits of the 997Cup power steering systems as it moves 10lbs from the rear of the engine and puts it in the front trunk.
