Question Name that engine sound...

Hi Y’all,

Longtime reader, first time poster.

I am interested in your help identifying the sounds from the rear of my 2001 996 Turbo with about 92k miles on it. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Phil

The infamous "Mezger rattle". Better sell it now, to me now for 50% of market value before its too late.

i have a mezger motor with 150k miles and it sounds a lot "better" than that! i dunno, man..i'd try 5/50 M1 on your next ( like yesterday! ) oil change, see if that helps.

Could be anything from nothing (much) to worry about or it could be something (much) to worry about.

The noise could be from a number of sources/locations. Could be a water pump or another accessory drive. Could be a leaking exhaust (the turbos are sealed to the exhaust with metal o-rings and if these aren't replaced when the exhaust is apart the exhaust can leak). Could be something loose in the exhaust. Or something from inside the engine.

My best advice -- and this is what I've always done when my Turbo has made a noise that I deemed new and needing looking into -- is get the car to a qualifed shop for a professional's expert opinion.

Based on my experience the tech will get the car in the air and he -- and maybe another senior tech -- will carefully search out the source, at least the location, of the noise. Once the location and even the source is known you can proceed from there.

How would the IMS rattle on the Mezger motor? It rides on journal type bearings...

I think everyone in this thread is giving OP a hard time, but I can't be positive.

sadly the mods let a lot of nontechnical banter persist on the forums. You just have to filter them out.

the chains ride from the ims up thru the cams and ride against chain tensioners that are a hardened plastic type of material. as they wear down they allow the chains to rattle more and more.
