When the shifter (linkage) broke in my 2003 Turbo the tech installed a 997 shifter. The new shifter made a world of difference.

So far after way over 100K miles -- I think the shifter broke with around 30K miles on the car and it now has 160K miles -- the replacement shifter is still without any play/slop.

I like function first's "Shift Right" kit along with the short shifter.

Just trying to sort through the options here...
  • Function First 996 or 997 shift console 'upgrade': $295 [Plastic bushings upgraded to ball bearings]
  • Function First 996 drop in shifter (OEM shift console, FF upgrades installed): $395
  • Function First 997 drop in shifter (OEM shift console, FF upgrades installed):
  • $495 Numeric Racing drop-in shifter: $600 (Currently $575 group buy) [All metal, early versions had some bushing issues if you are considering a used one]
  • Porsche OEM 996 shift console (996.424.010.05): ~$200 [What we have stock]
  • Porsche OEM 997 shift console (997.424.010.00): $226 (Sunset price) [15% shorter shift than 996]
  • Porsche OEM 997.2 GT3 shift console (997.424.010.91): $410 (Sunset price) [Same as above, but with billet aluminum bushings instead of plastic]
  • Porsche OEM 'Short shifter' (997.424.983.00): $430 (Suncoast price) [35% reduction from 996, 20% from 997 console. Plastic bushings]

Go to Sonnen for OEM stuff, cheaper than Sunset these days.

I recommend the B&M shifter with the EVOMS Billet Shift Linkage. Short shifts with a solid feel.
