Just an FYI: Yes, the 997 Turbo gearbox does work in a 996 Turbo

The 997TT gearbox is the red headed step child. Very little commonality between the 997TT manual box and the 996/997/GT2/3/Cup gearboxes which are easily rebuildable with pretty much a limitless amount of spare/upgrade parts available that can be used between all those gearboxes.
The gearing sucks on the 997TT gearbox especially for cars with more power. The 997TT gears are shorter then the 996TT and significantly shorter than 997GT2 gearing. The 997GT2 uses the traditional tried and true gearbox, not the 997TT oddball version.

(I have a buddy with a 997TT and he has claimed that the gearbox is far superior to the one in my 996TT)

IIRC, 997tt is a stronger gearbox stock vs 6tt, but as other have said lacks upgradability at this point
