kevin, which fuse or position #? and also.. is the sound causing premature wear? it sure sounds like it would!

Kevin, do you really think that noise i posted is lifters? My 99 C4 with 145K on the clock did the lifter tick tick tick on start up and it had this same "chain rattle". The M96 non Mezger motors are known for the tensioners wearing out/leaking down. The Mezger, not so much Can i pull the tensioners without risk of skipping timing if it lock at at TDC?

Mine sounds exactly like that if it sits for a few days.

That's the noise my Turbo makes after sitting a few days in real hot weather. And it has been hot. Yesterday it got up to 109F. Today it is forecast to reach 112F. I plan on using the Turbo today and I'm sure it will make this noise upon "cold" start.

That's chain noise. The tensioners are slack and the chains are rubbing against the guide rails. The rails are designed for this -- the chains rub against these rails all the time the engine is running -- so I don't worry about it.

(My 2002 Boxster does the same thing and has done this now off and on for 315K miles. The noise is a bit disconcerting but is really nothing to worry about.)

Update: Well, I started the engine Saturday and even "filmed" the start up but the engine did *not* generate the noise I expected even though it was 100F. The car had only sat unused since later Thursday night. I think the car needs to sit a couple of days for the noise to appear.

My car has also made this noise and my rule is to pull the fuel pump fuse if the car sits for more than a day...

Here's a link to a clip of a 997 Turbo that requires some cranking before it starts.

As you can see during the cranking the oil pressure needle doesn't even budge and even after the engine begins to run the oil pressure takes some RPMs to develop.

My 03 TT sounds the exact same after sitting a day, for a split second on startup, I always thought it was the lifters getting the oil. With that said I keep hearing about pulling the fuel pump fuse and cranking but I have a question about that. First, unless you run the fuel out of the rail first wouldn't it fire regardless? Second isn't running the injectors out of fuel hard on them? Seems to me the consensus is this sound, while nauseating for a split second, is fairly normal and I would hate to ruin my injectors by constantly running them out of fuel every time I pull the car in the garage for the next start, just curious?

I don't understand how some can worry so much about nothing. Just drive the car and enjoy it, or sell and buy a BMW 530i, they are pretty much dead silent at idle.

I have the awesome 3" Speedtech exhaust, with every cold start I think to myself: lord have mercy, what a glorious sound

On a more serious note, my car does all the noises pretty much every Turbo has, but I don't have time to worry about it, because it's perfectly normal.

The original owner of my car probably had this very same question because I have a record from when it was in for a annual service. The PC mechanic wrote: "No strange noises, engine sounds perfect".

If anything, just DRIVE the car, don't waste time on trying to find faults with something that's not broken, and as some stated, less noises when it's driven regularly.

well, lets just say it is best described as "cringeworthy" lol. as far as "driven regularly"? hows 144974 miles?

I know it is normal, it does make me grit my teeth. It also did not do it for the first year I owned the car. If there was a simple solution (other than pulling the fuse and cranking) I would take the time to do it.

A ways back I asked if the tensioners can be removed without risk of skipping the timing, anybody know?
