Metal Flakes in Oil Filter
I have an 02 996 Turbo with 66K miles that I autocross frequently and track occasionally. I'm the 3rd owner and I've had the car for 3 years. I put about 2K miles per year on the car. I got an oil change this week and I always ask for an inspecrion of the filter and for the first time found metal debris in the filter. I immediately thought IMS bearing but the dealer said that was highly unlikely and recommended an engine rebuild. I've park s the car and wanted to collect some thoughts on the best way to move forward.

Funny. A dealership wouldn't even know how to do an engine rebuild.
Start taking your car someplace else. Start doing used oil analysis. Do another oil change in 1,000 miles. Don't use Mobil 0W40.

Let us know what you find. Was the car making any noises or smoke from exhaust?

What has been your oil change durations? How many track/Xcross event are on the oil?
I have to assume that the dealer installed Mobil 0W40?
I would make 3 recommendations (similar to what LexVan has mentioned)
1) Invest in equipment and ask for help to change your own oil> at a minimum learn how to install a new oil filter. Very easy and cheap to accomplish.
2) Drain the oil that is in your engine crankcase. You will have 2.5 to 3 quarts. This oil is important. Call Blackstone labs for a oil test kit or visit your local CAT dealer. They will provide you with test containers. Purchase Mobil 1 5W50 and refill 2.5 to 3 quarts of oil.
Do this ASAP. We want to get a baseline test. We also want a thicker oil. It's hot right now..
3)Depending on what Blackstone says (post the results on Rennlist or email them to me and I will give you my opinion). Regardless, I would change the oil and filter in 1000 miles. I'd be putting in Mobil 5W50 Order it if you have to ahead of time.. There has been some sale promotions.
As Wross has eluded too>> Testing will determine which part of the engine is failing. Bearings, or hardened steel, and or aluminum.

Fyi turbos dont have IMS issues. The turbo engine is a Metzger design, a derivative of the Gt1 race engine! The naturally aspirated M96 engines have the IMS issues.
