Default COBB access tune & 5.0 FPR?

Hello,

does anyone have experience with COBB supporting a 5.0 bar fuel pressure regulator added to 2001 996 twin turbo?

The motor is also equipped with Evoms intake, IPD plenum, headers, x-pipe with 100 cell cats,k24 turbos & 1 bar waste gate actuators.

Since we added the 5.0 FPR it is running poorly on a oem factory tune.

Thanks in Advance

Rich

I have a Cobb MAFless tune from Sam with a 5 bar FPR. Runs perfectly.

COBB OTS tunes are not compatible with 1 Bar waste gates and or 5 Bar FPRs. You need a custom tune to run right/safe.

Will work fine with MAF too, but your car should have the tune adjusted for the increase in fuel pressure I believe.

Sam built me a custom MAFless tune and suggested that I go to a 5 bar FPR since I was running out of fuel on the stock FPR based on datalogs.

I would contact him for more info, he's a wealth of information.

Is their an experienced tuner in your area? I would think that you could get a custom tune for 1/2 a day worth of time at their facility.

5 bar is a band aid and a bad one at that. if you need more fuel install injectors and do it right. if you cant afford them wait until you can. 5 bar is a poor way to try to increase fueling

I agree for any significant increase in fuel needs, but I'm still on stock K16s and Sam just wanted a little more fuel up top. 5 bar is perfect for that.

Update from Sam @ bydesignauto.

Cobb can support 5 bar FPR & 1 bar waste gate actuators with a custom tune. Also the 5 bar FPR only provides more fuel under full throttle.

Thanks for reaching out. With stock turbos you will be fine. We are not doing anything that hasn't been done for almost 20 years bybtop tuners and not running dangerously. I can tell you you will be hard-pressed to find anyone who has large injectors on stock turbo chargers. I can also tell you that you will find some people that try to use a 5bar fuel regulator to act like large injectors and they can get in trouble. If you start to modify turbos and go over the factory fuel injectors capacity I suggest changing them. We will just be using a higher threshold to see better and more acceptable short and long term trims and injector duty. I'll also gladly continue to work with you and see what's going on with the car to make it as tip top as possible. Try to perform a pressure test and keep me posted. We will go through the logging/tuning process and make sure all is good and get you to meet your goals. On that note, the cool thing about Cobb is we can continue to grow with your goals. Custom tuning and changing anything we need along the way. Cheers

911 tuning runs 60 lb injectors, protomotive runs 72 lb injectors and epl runs 72 lb injectors. all recommended for fuel upgrades on even stock turbos.

maybe sam can document just how much of an increase in the injectors flow when pushed by a 5 bar

Thanks for the input Steve. There's a time and a place for everything and I've been fortunate enough to have learned when and where to use a 5bar from the best in the business. People have different needs/budgets and there's not only one way to take care of them. I still do business with the people mentioned and more. It is extremely rare to use aftermarket injectors on a stock turbo charger set up for normal use. Porsche had a use for the 5bar fuel regulator as well but I won't get too deep into it. When it calls for it we use 1000cc injectors now for really nice flexibility in the 600 to 1000 hp range depending on fuel. No one goes into any of my set ups without knowing exactly what the pros, cons and parameters are. I've been doing this long enough to stand on my word and reputation with never an issue regarding where are use a 5bar regulator mate. I don't care to argue about it but just want to make sure people get the right information.

If anyone has any questions or concerns guys feel free to direct them to me. I'd be glad to help out.
