No symptoms other than more audible spool and whoosh when off throttle.

Yup, that's what I was thinking too.

Check for leaks.. Put a test plug on the side intake plenum per the factory manual and pump the entire intake system to 12 to 14 PSI.. You will quickly find your leaks on the pre-turbo ducting/piping.

I haven't tested like this before, so simply build a plug the size of the airbox connector with a nipple so I can inject air and leave everything else intact?

I thought this method didn't test DVs since the pressure is equalized on both sides.

Yes, a 3" plumbing/sewer test plug.

To test your DV's>> use a miniVac and pull vacuum on each test port. If it holds they are good, if you can't build negative vacuum pressure you have a blown DV..

Thanks Kevin, I'll build a test cap this weekend and go from there. I tried to test shaft play and its very minimal, under 3mm diameter if I was to guess

Nate, look at my Avatar... That's a picture of my Stage 5 Z/C'd turbocharger. That's been there since 2003...

LOL that's too funny. As I sent that email I thought "man that looks like his avatar, but there's no way"

Do you have any specs or marketing docs on those old beasts? Would be nice to know what I can brag about

For those out of the loop, I bought this car and was told it was a stock x50, turns out it has Kevin's former pinnacle turbos. Might explain why I pulled on a 991 turbo s the weekend I bought it

Over the years I don't think I've ever had a problem with Kevin's turbochargers. You'll find it quickly I'm sure Nathan!

!

I'm sure as soon as I add any pressure to the intake side it'll make itself known. And if I can't find it I'll throw the baby out with the bath water and go the fender well intake route (I'm only 50% kidding).

quick update, its not boost or intake related it seems. I was able to narrow it down to either a idler / tensioner pulley or an accessory. I ran the car for 1-2 minutes last night with no belt and he noise was gone.

I had tried swapping just the bearings on each idler pulley but the noise actually increased, maybe I got a bad set of bearings or damaged them pressing them in.

I got 3 new Dayco pulleys or order along with a new gatorback belt. The old belt had a date code of 2009 so while it did not have any cracks for $25 its worth the piece of mind to get a new and improved belt on there.

I have known replacement dates for every accessory except the AC compressor and the WP. If the pulleys don't fix it I may look closer at the WP. The pulley has a little play but not more than the other accessories.

Let me tell you all that despite what Dayco's site, amazon, and Rock Auto say Dayco #89173 does NOT fit the turbo 996.

After mounting 3 new pulleys and a fresh belt I realized the pulleys are about 1/2" smaller in diameter.

Wrong pulleys on their way back, new pulleys on their way in. More to come.

Because the OEM ones that came with the car held up so well

I went with Sebro who is the OEM supplier it seems.
