Default BMW Car Club Chapter Is Banning Some New Bimmers from its Trackdays (UPDATE)

I guess we're all safe from this heavy handed ruling.

I have noticed a couple people on the 996 and 997 GT3 boards who are considering selling their cars to make space for the 991.2 GT3. In fact, there is a silver 996 GT3 in the marketplace right now where the owner says in the ad he is doing exactly that. However, I don't think the 996 GT3 prices will be impacted as directly as the 997s.

Realistically, I think there is a (small) segment of well-off 997 GT3 drivers who always get the latest track toy, but held-off on the 991.1 GT3/GT3RS because they like manuals. Those people will jump into the 991.2 GT3 and may marginally increase the # of 997 GT3s for sale on the market resulting in the prices coming down a bit (on a side note, I have heard ppl saying the 997 GT3 market is due for an adjustment). That in turn may indirectly impact 996 GT3 prices because more people will opt for the 997 GT3 as prices get closer together, forcing 6-3 prices to come down or stagnate. I think this is still a ways off from happening (if it does at all) though because I hear build slots are hard to get for the 991.2 and there is a high markup that will last into next year.

In the long run, I think the 6-3 has rarity going for it and enough people who recognize how special it is for it to skyrocket again in value. But my prediction is potential slight dip starting end of this year as more 997 GT3s hit the market and then stable prices for a couple years after which it takes off again.

This is just a theory, so feel to disagree. On a side note, if I am right and there's a dip coming up, now may be the time to sell for those who were planning on doing so anyway. Prices haven't really changed much since last year as far as I can see.

I agree with you. The 6-3 is a rare car and very unique. My good friend convinced me to buy the 6-3 when I started with DE 5 years ago. It has been a great journey to learn to drive the car and slowly improve overtime. I have also learned a lot about the car, its shortcomings and how to improve the handling to ensure if gives the right feedback before breaking loose.

What I like about the 6-3 is; mezger motor, homogenization from a race cars, the sounds, the mezger motor, it has no TC nor ESC, the feel, the look from rear or side when lowered, the transmission, the responsiveness. It is the best DE car.

Why would I trade up:
I would not trade up for a 7-3 as performance is equal. 7-3 has nannies and some even have sunroof.
I would not trade for 991.1 since not a race engine.
I will trade for 991.2-3 since motor is now homogenized race motor, with mechanical lifters, dry sump, de-foamer, mechanical limited slip with MT, etc.

On personal note, the people I started tracking with have either moved into more serious tracking and NASA competition or almost stopped all together so last year i decided to slow down with DE.
If I were to increase my DE activity, I would stay with the 6-3, but since am slowing down to 3-4 weekends per year, the 991.2 is the choice per above as well as more comfortable day to day on Houston concrete roads

In conclusion, the 6-3 is a unique and rare car and will go up in value over time. It is a great car to drive and an amazing DE car. For the people who know the 6-3, its value may increase over the 997.1. Maybe not the 997.2, but certainly the .1.

What is the current price for a 6-3 with some track bits on it? I'd like to pick one up in a couple of years time. I'm kind of hoping 991.2 being manual helps keep a lid on pricing (but I realise it's not the just the manual gearbox that sets the 6 apart from more modern cars).

There were very few 6-3s made and even less still around today. I don't see the prices collapsing as they did for the "normal" 996s (which is 100% why I kept my '03 C2)

I am keeping mine bone-stock and enjoying it. I did not buy it as an investment, but rather to drive & enjoy.

I agree with this. And, of those that are still around, many are dedicated track cars. I see 997/991 gt3's on the roads way more frequently than I see 996's (I can recall seeing exactly two on the roads of Phoenix in my life, and the last one I saw on a public street was probably 5 years ago.

Light, tossable, powerful, reliable, fast, raw, mezger, analog, no nannies, simple electronics, low production numbers =great fun and shouldn't lose much value in the short term and will almost certainly increase in the long term barring some unforeseen economic calamity!

996gt3 are great cars. If you have an all original super low mile car it will be worth a lot of money in the future.

If not, you'll have more fun and drive it like you stole it.

Besides my yellow 6-3, we have a gray, silver and black one here in my little town of Barrington,IL. Not too bad, nothing like what's around at my sister in-law's Los Altos though. I believe the black one was sold last year as it became a stripper and replaced with a cup.

Cheers

FUN indeed.
I had a great time this weekend at Streets of Willow.
The 3 is much more fun to drive from the rear than my previous 993.

Some years ago I got to drive a real 911R for a couple of hours.
These cars remind me of each other as both are loud (lacking insulation) and the ride is less than plush. Shave 500# off and it would be the 911R that Porsche didn't produce this time around. It's still closer than anything they build currently.

The 6GT pulls from relatively low rpm whereas the 911R likes the revs around 4,500 to be tractable and nothing really happens till it zings past 6,000.
But "have mercy!" it screamed like a banshee when it got on the cam. Hearing protection would have been nice.

FWIW; Any SWB 911 is fun to drive. If you haven't had the opportunity put it on the bucket list. It's like nothing else 911.
