To be fair you can find copies of the 996 cup bumper in fiberglass for < 1k from Getty and other vendors. Not the path I'd go but a cheaper alternative none the less. Fiberglass just seems like a really fragile and unforgiving material for a bumper in my opinion.

Agree. I had a spin and collected a brake marker in excess of 100 mph which caused a small crack in the end of the bumper in the wheel arch area. I'd imagine fiberglass would have disintegrated.

Dave, sounds wicked. Care to elaborate on what was involved?

Any issues at LCMT?

Nothing to it really!
Paypaled 5 or 6 HRDs (Hot Rod Dollars - 1HRD=500$) to a chap in MiamI for 997.1 Cup Quiet Version exhaust and headers.
WeTune bolted right up for another couple of HRDs.
Carbon rear bumper install.
After test run, noticed slight bubbling of paint near tailpipe outlets.
Installed thermal foil shield to cut radiation.
All good.

Sound at LCMT... got blackflagged once or twice... now avoiding WOT near undercover mic man hiding in bushes.
This is where I practice all my point bys. ;-)
I think I'm generally borderline if going full out. Tried it in later sessions with no consequence. Maybe mic man snoozing.

Where did you source the carbon bumper cover, Dave?

Thanks,

Bob

Box came in from a place called Safetech Composites in Miami.
I can't remember the vendor that I transacted with. Let me mull over that.
The part was perfect and well finished.

The 997 headers and cats are compact, single-piece units with equal length tubing which is much improved. You'll want new header gaskets and header bolts when making this swap, obviously. The O2 sensors need to be customized to reach your engine harness because the 996 exhaust crosses over and clips into the opposite side for rear sensors while the 997 system doesn't. If using the 996 Cup rear bumper then you'll need to get creative with the aluminum rear bumper beam and remove the rivets from the bumperettes to clear [which is what I did] or remove the bumper beam completely which I think is a bad idea. You'll also want the Cup car heat shielding for this bumper.

For mufflers, the above posts are correct. I had Ti center muffler only with FVD single tube bypass pipes which comes with secondary inlet blockoff plates. If you go with the 997 RS muffler then you also need the muffler straps and a correct 997 muffler bracket because the 996 bracket won't work. Goes without saying that the cat pipe to side muffler clamps and center muffler side flanges are also needed.

I was going to test an idea which allows keeping the stock 996 GT3 rear bumper and side exits but leverages the 997 GT3 headers + cats. If you're interested then email me through Rennlist.
PM sent regarding your idea! Sorry for the bump of an older thread, but man, if there was a way to get the 997 gt3 exhaust sound using the stock 997 header/cat combo, bypass elbow pipes, 997 center section, but the 996 side exit bumper, I'd be in heaven! That is the configuration I liked best on my old 997.1 (after trying a few configurations), but I don't really love the look of the center exist set ups on the 996. Anyone tried this?

Bumping an old thread, I’ve been running the 997gt3 header, cat and center muffler. Now ran in to the very common rear crack on muffler. Muffler is toast. To many cracks to weld.😔
Anyone have experience with Dundon Orange center muffler. Unfortunately I need the quiet version to pass sound on most tracks here in Europe. Damn, I miss Sebring sometimes.

Good luck breaking a Dundon orange center muffler. I dare you to try your hardest, Jamie makes good stuff. Sebring was my home track for a couple years, it is a great track and not a care in the world for sound restriction as it's in the middle of nowhere haha.

Kudos for coming here to talk highly of a competitors product.

I appreciate that. There are relatively few people and companies on Rennlist that actually support the Porsche community with their experience and the products they provide...I consider them A players. Jamie/Dundon is on that relatively short list and they know that. I have no hesitation in recommending the best person or company to meet a member's goals in the event that myself or SOUL does not fit the bill. I would expect the same from those that aren't here to be cookie cutter sales employees, and actually value the members of our community.

That says a lot,

You don’t happen to know what dB numbers it provides. Dundon orange are kind of pricey (almost 4grand)., So nice to know before starting the process of putting an order in?
