Default Question on GT3 shocks & cup car shocks

Hi All,

Can someone tell me the differences in length - say total elongated or compressed between the street 996 GT3 shocks and the 996 Cup car shocks?

Thanks

Ray

I have the info at home, will post it during the weekend. I'm now in Japan.

Tim Olsen can help as well, he switched my 997 JRZs to 996 fitment, the rear shock bodies are different lengths, as likely are the 6 cup.

I have a partial answer, just rears measured:
-Piston length, from the top of the body to start of threads:
Cup 120mm, GT3 170mm
-Shock body, from the top down to middle of the attachment bolt hole:
Cup 220mm, GT3 230mm
-Piston's top threaded part is equal
(Bilstein 3-way adjustables, AFAIK early Cup)

IMO fronts are of more or less equal length, or at least the difference is insignificant.

Hi Pete,

Thanks! Sorry for the dumb question, but I need more rear shock travel due to the changes I made and the ride height I want. I need to shorten the ones I have. The Cup car heights is probably a good place to be. I also want to lighten the springs a bit - after I get the bum steer set :-)

Are you saying that the overall difference in length is 10mm or 50mm or??

OK, my bad...the total difference is 60 mm. Basically max available piston travel is 120 mm, without the bump stop. Even a Cup uses one. The trick is to spec springs so that car sits at wanted piston position when stationary...
I have rather mild spring rates, so only a main spring (HRF 200-60-120) is needed. With stiffer springs you'll need a helper too.
