996 GT2s in Australia
Couldn't find anywhere on line how many 996 GT2s were delivered in Aus. Spoke to a contact at Porsche Centre Melbourne today and he confirmed:
2002 - 18 units
2003 - 3 units
2004 - 8 units
Total 29 units so they are very rare. A Porsche specialist I spoke to recently said quite a few have been crashed, bashed, written off, tracked or targa'd so there are very few good ones remaining.
I'm collecting my new purchase on Saturday from Sydney. A silver 2002 996 GT2 with Clubsport seats, cage and harnesses fitted (plus original bits supplied) and some subtle turbo, waste gate and exhaust mods. Can't wait. Been practicing the art of gentle right angle flex!

Just out of curiosity, how is it like to drive in Australia? I am living in Japan at the moment and it down right sucks here. Gas is expensive (compared to US), drivers license is very hard and expensive to get (at least 3 months and $3,000), road exam is at least $600 and if you fail you have to pay again to retake, taxes on everything including road tax (positive note is that the roads in Japan are amazing, rarely see any potholes), and just buying a car is very difficult (you need an affidavit from your local police station to prove you have a parking space and annual inspections are incredibly detailed and as a result expensive). And don't forget about the traffic. Open road is hard to come by besides highways which cost about $2 a mile.
I could see Australia being a little easier to own a car, let alone a porsche. Good luck with the new ride.
Cheers!

Sounds like you bought M.C.'s car? Nice pickup. Felt very tight when I was passengered in it.

Other than speed cameras and over zealous cops, it's great here. Lots of great roads near major cities and traffic not really an issue. Licences, registration etc pretty straight forward. But cars here are much more expensive that in other countries. Are we better off overall, probably.
Great info. Thanks man! Best of luck with the new ride.
