993 to 996 GT3 "upgrade"?

996 GT3's are very desirable / capable cars, but before you sell the 993, ask yourself if you are willing to give up, the sounds, smells, 5 gauge dash, wide hips, etc. to gain the performance advantages that the GT3s offer.
I came very close to selling mine to buy a beautiful SY '3 two years ago.
I have no regrets about not selling the 993.
But then I'm more into the aesthetics of the car versus the ultimate performance.
Hope you find what you want.

I left my 993 back in Germany and its now been sold. Surprisingly I don't miss it as much as I thought I would. Perhaps it's because the hunt for a new car has overshadowed the empty hole in my life!?
I've since found a one owner, never tracked, low mileage 6gt3 and I now need to make a decision. It's not my ideal color (silver) and it has no track mods (easily added) but otherwise it's perfect and the price is very good. After driving it I was surprised at how muc more civilised it was compared to my modded 993 but clearly much faster.
I clearly prefer the 993 for the 'feel' but I'm now looking for something different -specifically a trackday toy. I guess the real solution is to add an air cooled car to the stable at a later date.

Really hard to argue with that strategy! I love the 964/993 and would have one if the space/budget allowed.

We had a 993 for 9 years and 120,000 miles. LOVED it for each and every mile.
HOWEVER, after having the 04 GT3 for 21 months now, I can honestly say I won't go back. yes, I hate the 996 interior - rattles, squeaks, cheap feel - but we LOVE the performance. It feels raw, tight, noisy (road/engine/transmission noisy), stiff clutch, really responsive...all the things we all love about a Porsche. and its REALLY fast!! But it has a few nice creature comforts that I really like (A/C is a must here in the South) And yes...a cup holder. We drive our car A LOT (bought at 16,500 miles, just tripped 52,000 today...remember...21 months) and I like having coffee on my way to work, or after we leave a hotel, or...
And as much as a 993 looks great...a GT3 does stand out (especially in Yellow).

My current strategy is to begrudgingly sell the Alfa Spider (to make space in the garage) and hang on to the 993 until I'm absolutely sure I love the 6-3 as much (or more...). Might even try to hang on to both of them if I can swing it since it seems they would both be about as good as "money in the bank".

My $.02 regarding the 6-3:
Be prepared, it will be very different than the 993. It will feel big and heavy at first. But...anyone that came from a 3.2 Carrera to a 993 says that the 993's are big and heavy too, so it's all in perspective. Once you drive it for a while, it feels small again...
They are twitchy if not aligned right. For some reason, a 6-3 is VERY temperamental about alignments.
The steering is VERY responsive. if you THINK changing lanes, you probably already have. That took getting used to. I've done this with my wife - said 'look at the steering wheel and tell me when I move it'. She never saw me move, and we changed lanes!
Acceleration is VERY responsive - flex your big toe and you're way over the speed limit!
Brakes are amazing...
But I will say...it may take a little while for you to love the car like you love the 993. Took me a month or so. Now when I drive a 993, I am amazed how that it took me so long...
When I was contemplating trading the 993 for a 6-3, I asked a lot of questions you are. And after driving just about any/every model Porsche out there (except a C-GT) I understand why I was told that a 996 GT3 is the ONLY car that compares closely with a 993...
I compare the cars like this:
996 = butter knife
993 = steak knife
6-3 = scalpel

^ Very interesting. So far I have liked the 6 GT3 more then I expected for the same reasons you stated. My DE focused 993 is listed for sale but I am hoping it doesn't sell until after I have had an opportunity to drive it back to back with the GT3. I know the GT3 will be the faster one but will it be that much more fun is what I am really curious about.

I'm late to this thread but if you have the space and $$ I would keep the 993 and set up the GT3 for the track. I loved my 97 C2S as a daily driver and back road car. the GT3 has such track potential my car has evolved into a full time track beast.
Now you got me thinking about buying another C2S! There may be a fleet expansion 2013.

Well I've never owned or driven a 993, I 've had a couple of 964's including a US carrera cup and a ton of 69-84 911's. I owned a 05 GT3 and that car was fantastic, yes the interior is crappy but who the hell cares, the motor alone is worth the price of admission. I sold mine because I thought the performance envelope was absurb for street use but on a track it would be amazing. These cars are the performance bargain of a lifetime, hardly any more $$ than a decent turbo.

I run in the Red group in my region and all but about 4 cars are GT3 types. So after years of being one of the 4 non GT3 members I thought I should give in and give the GT3 a try. So far the 6gt3 has been a lot of fun on the street and based on all the replies here it will probably be a ton of fun on the track. I won't know this until our season starts up again which isn't until next May.
