Default Dilemma: RS or Cup wing

Background:
996.2 GT3
stock except for toe links, pads and rotors (JRZ triples, other solid mounted suspension components and AIM XGLOG ready to go in this winter)
driven to track
98% track (80-90% open track days, occasionally with a coach, the rest structured DE)
occasional trip to get ice cream with one of the kids or with the wife to the club
will run Cup lip with either regardless
primary track buddy drives a 964 race car

Initial thoughts:
RS - less obvious (as if that is ever possible with this car), less downforce, adjustable with shims
Cup - DOWNFORCE, works as picnic table at the track, but very obvious

Thanks,
Mike

Cup wing all the way. It's more efficient. You can set it up for equivalent downforce as RS wing with less drag. Translation - faster trap speeds on the straight.

Is the Cup wing street legal in the USA?

Its not legal for road use in Germany (not TUV approved) and has given problems on Touristfahten days when the marshals feel like making the point (they wont let you on).

There is no equivalent to TUV-approved in IL at least as how I understand the TUV process works. Not sure is it would present and issue. The car is only on the streets a few times per year, so the likelihood of an incident is low, but then again it stands out.

"Is the Cup wing street legal in the USA?"

One can do anything to the body of a car in the US. You'd be shocked at the stupid stuff kids bolt (or pop-rivet) on their cars...usually with hideous results. IMHO, a cup wing on a street 3 is approaching that category. With the RS wing, one can switch to stock wing in 10 minutes...

+1 absolutely if the car is strongly track biased, and consistent with my limited - so far - cup wing experience. For a full time streeter though, the RS wing is the better choice.

Besides, 911SLOW has a screaming deal on a cup decklid/wing, which has already been fitted. All you need is paint.

Just so you know, any aftermarket lid is going to require a lot of work for it to be "just right."

In case you are considering the economic aspect. 996 RS carbon fiber wing, no problem selling and getting a fair price. Other mods on street cars, very hard to recover ones investment.

It's true. I posted my Cup wing and got a bunch of emails but nobody showed up with the money. Look at John's package, also still for sale.

On the other hand, I bet my RS wing would sell in a day!

On the plus side - I get to have both!
