Think he stated he was getting sent overseas for > year assignment and hated to see the thing sit and go to waste.

Yeah, I found the for sale thread. good luck on your assignment, I don't think I could stand doing that kind of travel/relocation but I guess that's how you can afford to build a 4.0 GT3 and get rid of it a few months later.

Hey guys, I'm the new owner of the famed 4.0 that Serge built. I haven't had a whole lot of time to post lately but I'll definitely provide an update soon...I want to keep this thread alive to document the continued evolution of the car. There have been some ups and downs with it since it came into my hands but she's back on the road now and running well. The garage is stocked with goodies that will be going on soon...RS front bumper, motons, 380 brembos, and fikses to name a few. Oh yeah, I also put 997 GT3 Supercup pipes (ie straight) on for the hell of it and it sounds nasty as hell. Not sure my neighbors feel the same though...

While Matt has been enjoying my old girl, I've found out some interesting history on the development of the original "4 Liter" pistons.

I recently met a fellow Mechanical Engineer that interned at PMNA and helped with cup engine building back in 06/07. Long story short, we start talking 4 liter flat-6s and the 105.4mm Mahle piston came up. I had originally thought they were developed by a Southern California shop that has been buildling these 4-liter cup engines. Come to find out...the 105.4mm Mahle piston is the result of efforts by factory Porsche and Brumos Racing for the Grand Am Daytona Prototype series.

Brumos needed a 4 liter engine, and instead of achieving it by boring and stroking (like the GT3 RS 4.0), they developed these pistons, which require machining of the case, water jackets, and even the heads at the time. Remember, the revised 997 heads hadn't come out yet! The displacement is just a HAIR under 4 liters - we're talking less than half a mL under. This allowed them to run with a lower minimum weight than the cars with 4-5 liters.

Anyways, always cool to know the racing heritage of the components that you use. Matt - you have a true RACE engine in that 996!

Hey guys. Been a while since I've posted but I'll get some recents pics and the dyno numbers up in the next day or two. She's evolved a bit since Serge owned her but she's doing well.

Hey Serge,
Did you use the factory cup bumper? I have seen a few aftermarkets and not very impressed.

I'll let "Boostin" chime in on the final power figures.

The stock 996 cams aren't ideal if maximum peak hp is your target, but this engine has more low-end torque than a RS 4.0.
