Default "rears wear twice as fast" = justification for second set of rear wheels?

I recently spent many evenings searching/researching about track tires. A common observation is that the fronts last twice as long as the rears. Maybe this has been brought up before (and now I can't find it again) but for those who track their cars, and have a second set of wheels/tires... Is it worth buying 2 extra rear wheels? Use fronts + rearsA one day, then fronts + rearsB the next, and alternate until all 6 tires are dead, which hopefully happens at the same time.

Not sure if this gets any more life out of the investment, but it avoids the issue (?) of pairing half-used fronts with brand-new rears.

Does anyone do this? Am I over-thinking?

I have 3 sets of wheels.

One brand new red RS set as money in the bank.
One silver GT3 mk2 set fitted with Mich PS2. Winter track days.
One origional red RS set (spider marks on the inner faces) fitted with Pirelli Corsa R tyres for summer trackdays.

What you say has logic. I also have a front pair of PS2 part worn and no matching rears.

If you have space you can never pass up the chance of buying a clean set of OEM wheels - they cost a small fortune new.

Your logic makes sense, but it might be hard to find someone selling a set of rear wheels though.

I am not really seeing this. I think if your car is set up pretty well they all wear about even, front to rear. As noted here before they are cycled out before they cord so basically any minor wear differences don't matter anyways unless you are running them to the cords.
What I do see is they need to be swapped from side to side because all the tracks turn right. This will extend the life considerably and done in conjunction with brake bleeding and general inspection in the wheel wells is no big deal.
I also use two sets of wheels, a track set with Cup tires and the OEM set with PS2's for wet/cold.
Don't really think a third set is neccessary. Now, would I like another set.....

I have 3 sets of rears and 2 1/2 fronts ( I still need 1 more front wheel) I rotate usage base on track and the number of days I'll be away. You can't have too many wheels I thought. lol

Thanks for the replies, you bunch of enablers. I'd be better off asking what kind of meth you like best Rob, I think Victor already accounted for two sets of slicks. It is the only way 5 sets makes math-sense with the 4-item list he gave. Thanks agian folks.

I had one extra rear wheel and tire with one of my sets of wheels on my 993, and rotated the rears and got 50% more life out of the rear set, which matched the front tire life. I hated throwing away fronts with good rubber left on them.

Double that, Rob. Try towing your car to a far away track only to cord your tires on the first day. Now you need two sets of everything. I just couldn't imagine running Hoosiers on day 1 and then having to go to a backup set of Nittos or worse - PS2 on day 2.

FWIW, I get just about 2:1 wear (R:F) on my car running R6s. With my setup, across the tire wear is even, just faster in the rear. [I don't use the Kassumaul alignment though].

himself -- when your rears wear out, do you put on new rears to run with your half worn fronts?

Nope. I either toss the fronts, donate them, or run scrubs on the rear. If I get sticker tires, I get a full set. I would bet most do as well.

Welcome to the world of lots of mismatched tires! lol.
