Default Motorsport parts

I am sure that newbies like me must be boring/frustrating to all the people that have been doing this for a while. I seem to be re-inventing the wheels, so to speak. I found out a lot of my questions about the cup brake spoilers after i did my search using the part number instead of previous methods -->yielded much better results.

Heck, i also came across an interesting bit about the front lip spoiler. Turns out the cup lip spoiler costs less and apparently goes a bit lower for that added downforce. and it costs less...did i mention that? Always good for a consumable.

One of the things that i have found is that information is spread out among many threads, sometimes buried deep within a thread that may have little to do with the initial subject.

I rely on the search a great deal, but i still miss things. Could we get a list of motorsport parts (cup, etc) that are commonly used by folks as replacements for original parts. Not only could this be helpful to me, but to many other folks that are getting into this with more 996's changing hands.

thanks, fve

Default 99g GT3 parts, 996 Service Manual

Ok. Let me get the ball rolling. If anyone finds this useful, please feel free to chime in. I wish I could have found some of this stuff more easily...

996 GT3 parts catalogue:
http://techinfo.porsche.com/techinfo...SA_KATALOG.pdf

To access, need to go the Porsche tech site, create account (name, password). Easy to do. Can also access all this info for other Porkers. The international starting point:
http://techinfo.porsche.com/techinfo/index.jsp

Shop manual for 996. Really all 996 mk 1, but also has specific info for the GT3. Also lots of other Porkers and some other cars:

Default Cup Brake Duct Spoilers

Part number
996.341.117.90 left
996.341.118.90 right

Summary
Though they may not look like much more, they direct much more air for superior front brake cool. The plastic is much thicker and less likely to deform at speed. Snap on replacement for original ducts, but many reinforce with cable ties since they can fly off. Also, decreased ground clearance. There are some numbers on the plastic that differ from the part number that through people off. They are only due to the casting process. Though a good idea for all tracked cars, seem especially important for those with PCCB.

Alternatives
RS brake ducts: apparently smaller, do not confuse the parts.
No brake ducts: not a good idea.

Photos

2: original brake duct spoiler, right side
3: cup duct spoiler, same angle as original on left side, note how much further it projects

Default Front Lip spoiler/spliter

Part Number
996.505.986.91

Summary
Costs about 1/2 the stock spoiler. Though some indicate that it projects further down, it seems that the main difference is that there is a wider edge (vs. the taper) that runs toward the wheel arch. Though there is debate about the how much additional down-force if supplied, it seems that most feel it is negligibly great than the stock splitter.

Alternatives
No splitter: some go without one, but even i can feel the difference at the front end.

Frank

Thanks for posting this stuff. I am like you, new to the GT3 world and interested in track prep info.

BTW, I found the cheapest place for cup ducts to be Don Rosen's online parts store. Cheapest by far, even with shipping.

As for the cup splitter, I had a real hard time mounting mine because the holes did not line up perfectly with the bumper cover holes. The double sided tape made it even more diffiucult to do because you couln't adjust things as you went along. Once the surfaces touch, they stick (that's the point, after all). Because the fit wasn't perfect, it had loosened up a bit on the drive to VIR and came off anyway when I sampled the trackside grass just south of South Bend.

Talk about a work in progress.

The 996 Cup splitter (at least the three that I've used) does not come with double-sided tape, only the normal splitter does, so I've not had that problem.

Great info above. Thanks.

When it comes to splitters you have to apply the universal law of mechanics: IF IT MOVES AND SHOULDN'T USE DUCT TAPE, IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD USE WD40. Personally I substitute GOOP for duct tape a lot especially for the front splitter. A bead between the splitter and the bumper holds it pretty solid and looks a pile better than duct tape.

Yesterday I put on a new splitter (stock P/N) and all new attachment push pins (latest version). These are the ones with plastic phillips screws (which don't work all that well).
So I replaced the plastic screws with # 10 - 3/4" sheet metal screws. These do not strip and expand the clip for a good fit.
I will see how long this one will last!

Carefree,

I hope that the sheet metal screws are not too long. The reason plastic screws are used is so that when (not if) the spoiler gets ripped off again, it will come loose without taking any or all of the bumper with it. That is one reason why many of use use small plastic fasteners and tape.

Chuck, you raise a good question. I made sure the screws were no larger in diameter or longer than the plastic ones.
The plastic screws were going in about half way then the head would round off with no more grip for the phillips driver.
If I encounter any problems, I will re-post.
Lucky enough, the street is the problem with these splitters, not the track.

Well, i am glad that some folks find this useful. I was worried about the silence for a while...thinking that this could well be an self-indulgent exercise. But, perhaps not.

The more in think about it, the more in think this forum could use a FAQ like thread, something of a starting point. There are many things that i do not know a whole lot about, but i am trying to learn as i go along and really understand the bits and pieces and the best way to put it all together.

I am happy to maintain this from time to time. If people want, PM me info on various parts, i can put it together and post the compiled info.

Off the top of my head, other items that may be worth while, with much emphasis on alternatives....
  • RS motor mounts vs. wevo vs standard
  • cup brakes (then there are all the others...)
  • Brake pads
  • all the suspension bits and pieces, various drop links, monoballs, etc.
  • harnesses
  • seats
  • or instead of seat and harnesses since this is too broad, how bouts some basic safety items. This is a big debate (yup, one that i started) in my region.

Off the top of my head.

Leigh2 has some great info on front screens. I will let him share his experience and photos if he wants.
We had a great time at PIR and he loves his GT3 and all the joy it has to offer.
Then again, don't we all?
The day I sell my GT3 it better be for a Cup car.

The more the merrier. I went the Home Depot route with the screens: galvanized mesh, black spray paint, wire cutters. I had the car for all of several months and got tired of pulling leaves, trash and small squirrels out from in front of the radiators. I put the screens at the same time that i installed the Escort 9500ci so the screens also function to hide the gear nicely. Heck, if someone else does not put up that info, i will. 1 small step at a time.

Agree we need to do something but it takes initiative and effort.

Many people just ask questions and don't try to use the search tool, which is a bad practice.

Some things you brought up may be best entered in the "Do It Yourself" section.

The other issue with sharing information is there are several web sites, so currently one has to look around to find answers.

I would suggest an FAQ sticky at the top of the forum, maintained in a consistent format by a group of volunteers (3-4; since I present it, I'd volunteer) with the process for updating/modifying the information done Wikipedia-like.

Search does work if as a newbie you know the right terms. An FAQ would be so much cleaner for posterity!
