It's not rocket science. Where ever you put the resistor, plug a multimeter onto the airbag module onto the same pins and measure the resistance. To be honest, it's probably only looking for an open circuit so the difference between 1.8 and 2.8 versus infinite resistance isn't a consequence.....

Consider that you are all right!

Just where is the resistor placed? Do you tap or splice across airbag wires? Are there only two wires? Does someone have a picture or good description to help us garage DIYers out? I really don't want to screw up a harness or cause a short. I've been living with it, but we have an annual state inspection and they won't pass it. I'd like a long term fix. TIA Kyle

Took the car to the shop today to have the resisters put in, did not go will they need more time will do it on Monday. They needed a clutch box? that was missing from my car, to get exact reading of which resister. I do not need to buy the box, it just helps them in some way. I know this info does not help you, but it is a job I would not try to do on my own.

Gang,

This thread was started by me.

There IS a Porsche part and I have ordered it. When I get it I will share all the info.

Please send me the info when you get it. I took Dan D out for a ride with me at Monticello, and when I told him the airbag was still activated, he brought his arms up to cover his chest. And I wasn't trying to scare him!

Listers,

I have now been informed by the guy who was going to get my the Porsche part airbag-cutoff switch that he was mistaken: there is a 993 part but no 996 part. His shop is now trying to create such a part and will keep me advised.

MEANWHILE ... what are the results from the homebrew guys who were going to use a resistor???
AND does the resistor approach
a) stop the airbag from functioning
b) restore full normal operation [including the airbag light going dark] after it is removed ???

Thanks for the news, even if disappointing. If nothing comes up in the next week or so, I'll start working on my own fix ( last track event is this coming weekend). My goal is to have it not set off the Air bag fault light, but still allow airbag function on the occasions that the bag is in. Presumably a resistor wired in series with the wires at the chassis end connector should work. Kyle

Ok, I just put in the 1.8 I got from gert and it doesn't work. We put a black sticker over the light.

so va122 didn't have success.

more details, pls:

Did you successfully disable the airbag with the resistor?
Did you successfully re-enable the airbag by removing the resistor?
Was your only problem that the airbag light stayed lit?

TIA, etc

That's my thought. Once you apply the resistor the DME needs to be reset by the dealer (PIWIS or PST2).

Rick -

I put my hands across my chest to hold the harness rather than the door handle because of the side airbags. I've been warned by a couple of people that the side airbag can break your wrist if your hand is there. The harness has me in anyway. I just need to put my hands somewhere where I can hang them and keep them out of your way.

I'm at WGI today and a GT3 hit some armco.. I minor hit, but the side airbags went off on the passenger side..

So a part to temporarily disable the airbags would be very useful.
