Default Which gear oil do you use? Mobil Mobilube PTX, Shell Transaxle, other?

Both are the 2 approved tranny oils as listed by PCNA. However, the reason I ask is that the current PET catalog lists the Mobil Mobilube PTX as the ONLY gear oil for the 04-05 GT3 and the Shell Transaxle for all the rest of the 9X6 line.

I am getting ready to do my first tranny oil change and was hoping to draw from the experience some of y'all may have experienced.

So....Mobil PTX, Shell, Other?

TIA!

My dealer follows what the PET catalog states. And for the GT3 is states that the Mobillube PTX is used. I assume the make-up is geared (no pun intended) for use with the LSD. The shell I assume doesn't have quite the same makeup and you might experience a non-100% functioning LSD. I considered using the Mobil1 75W-90 from the local auto parts store but the makeup of it would probably be great for the non-LSD 996's but not for a GT3.

I will probably just pay the dealer to change it since I imagine the labor is about 1 hour. Totally worth $100 permium to NOT have to do it.

Thanks for the link Lewis. I'll check into it.

Check the thread HERE.

Note that post #13 has some hard data on the Porsche-approved oils and the copper corrosion inhibitors that the LSD wants. It took me some time to find that data!

This can be a religious topic, so I'll say no more.

I also remember the threads on this topic (things are not simple these days). As was stated the problem with oil choices was focused on care of the limited slip. I believe the factory fill lubricant is no longer available and that started the Rennlist debate.

My dealer carries the factory fill and rec'd gear oil (Mobillube PTX) but only has it in 20 L drums. He said that I could buy for 1/20 of the cost of the drum per L. IIRC, he quoted me about $20-25L.

Dell, The Mobil site only lists Mobil 1 75w90 75w-140, no PTX Any comments on the Mobil 1 being suitable? I think viper bob recommends it.

Dave, the Mobil site only lists the commercially available products at your local Auto Zone, etc.. The "factory rec'd" stuff is ordered through the dealer. The Mobil1 75-90 is probably VERY good for a car without LSD like the GT3, but I have heard from some others that tried it and the LSD did NOT perform as it should have. I will be using the Mobillube from my dealer.

Interesting Dell, further research has turned up a couple of sources that say Mobilube SHC 75W-90 is the OEM fill for the GT3, RS, and cup car. The Mobil site, however shows that it's been discontinued and replaced by Mobil Delvac Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-90

I'm about ready to throw up my hands and visit the dealer for this stuff, and return the Mobil 1 I purchased. It was $10 and change from Kragen... I wonder what the dealer charges for the "correct" fluid?

The "correct" fill for the GT3 is the Mobillube PTX and it can be sold by the L from the 20L drum.
