Default Which car: GT3 or E60 M5?

Okay guys...I realize that this is a Porsche forum, and with that comes an inherent bias. I also know that these are two totally different cars with two different purposes. That having been said...which one should I get?

FYI...my M3 will be staying. The Cayenne S and 2001 M5 (which I've enjoyed every second of owning) will be going.

Now, I don't need four seats and I don't need practicality. I just want a very fast car that I'll enjoy owning. I've narrowed it down to these two vehicles from a list of about 7 or 8 choices.

For those that are not familiar with the new M5, it's a monster. 507 hp, 7-speeds, V-10 with a 8,250 redline. It ran the 'ring in 8:00 flat (not bad for a 4 door car that weighs 4,000 lbs). Some press quotes from the first test drives:

"This car is FAST. Viciously, wickedly and bellowingly fast. The kind of
fast that gives mid-engined supercars a bloody nose and a kick in the nuts."

"Despite its four doors, navigation and leather, it will annihilate
pretty much anything that gets in its way...The M5 stands alone."

"It makes the old M5 look like a flintlock musket compared with today's
laser-guided smart bomb."

"Push the right pedal for lightspeed acceleration. Push the left for
equally impressive deceleration. Those brakes inspire unbelievable
confidence. You can lean on them so deep into corners you finish up well
beyond the point where you're expecting the ABS to kick in. They'll do
this, time and again, with neither fuss nor fade."

"Makes traditional adversaries like the RS6 and E55 feel wooden and
monosyllabic by comparison."

Now, you might have the mistaken impression that I've made up my mind already. I haven't. I've only pasted the press releases for those that don't follow BMW M cars. You of course already know the amazing abilites of the GT3, so I don't need to share them with you.

Any thoughts/ advice to help me make my decision would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I think my GT3 is the most fun car I've ever driven, but if you're deciding between it and a sedan, it's probably not for you.

You can't compare the two. If you can appreciate a GT3 nothing except a 360 CS can substitute. Why not have a poll, which would you chose to buy a 747 or an F22 - roughly the same price.

You should sell the Cayenne for the M5 - that's a closer comparison.

"But the 747 has more power so it should be faster, right?"

Well the problem with that analogy is that a F22 would demolish a 747 in a race. The M5 will run very close to a GT3 around a track, and in a straight line I'll give the advantage to the M5. Of course around the track I'll give the edge to the GT3...but the longer track, the smaller the gap between the two becomes. Point is the M5 is a serious sports car. Regardless of how many doors it has. Maybe not as serious as the GT3...but damn close.

I sold both the M5 and TT; and bought both a GT2 and GT3..all for performance.

So Colm, I take it you prefer the GT3 far more than the TT? Thanks.

An M5 will not touch a GT3 on the track. Not even close.

"Okay guys...I realize that this is a Porsche forum, and with that comes an inherent bias. I also know that these are two totally different cars with two different purposes. "

And you couldn't figure out what the response here would be?

"Point is the M5 is a serious sports car. Regardless of how many doors it has. Maybe not as serious as the GT3...but damn close."

So do you want the serious sports car, or one that's damn close?

Greg. You're not confusing the E60 M5 with the older E39 M5 (2000-2003), are you? The new E60 M5 (which has not been released to the public yet) was tested around the 'ring by the BMW test drivers where it ran a 8:00 flat. The stock GT3 time that I found was 7:56. That's pretty darn close if you ask me.

I see a moderator added a choice to my poll. I'm very impressed by your maturity.

The Hummer has the best commercials of the three, but the worst name, if that helps you make your decision.

Gee thanks Mike. Just don't what I'd do without your intelligent input.

It's obvious that I'll have to make my decision on my own. Thanks so much for the help everyone. Much appreciated!
