Default Gauge Failure Light

I am having a persistant problem with the temp gauge that the local dealer seems unable to fix and was wondering if anyone else has had the same or similar problem

The temperature up here in the Frozen North is now about 35 F in the mornings and I have a 20 mile drive to work.

The temp gauge heads on up to 60 degrees C and then stalls there until the red light starts flashing, the needle falls to full cold and then the instrument failure message appears on the dash. This happens EVERY time I drive the car from cold.

After about 15 minutes of the flashing light the gauge jumps into life and the flashing light goes off.

The light will stay off until the next time the gauge has to pass through 60 C.

I have monitored the ECT with an OBDII scanner and there are no drop outs in the reading. Although the CE light has come on with a P0116 code recorded.

The tech at the dealer feels that there is a problem with the thermostat between the 2 rads. I have never heard the fans come on even after a hot track session and the temp has never gone over 83C.

i had the same thing first they replaced the sending unit (code 116) and it still did it, then the themostat (code 125) and the gauge (no code) then it went away .so it was either the thermostat or the gauge. if i remember the car had about 1500mi on it at the time and the codes were 116 then 125 which was a "blocked thermostat". hope this helps carl

Thanks Carl.

I drove the car again today with the scanner hooked up to monitor the engine temp and with an ambient temperature of 10 C the engine temp never went over 68 C on the highway, I'm sure that the thermostat must be stuck open.

Thanks for the input.
