Experiences with caster adjustment from front top plate
Does anyone have experience with front camber/caster plates on their car? I'm looking for some comments on how much caster adjustability there was with this route, say in comparison to having an adjustable puck in the lower control arm.

This is not a simple question, because the whole strut can be rotated, which changes the ranges for both caster and camber. I'm sure there are threads which will give you the info you need. Try Kussmaul as a search word.
Andy may know the values obtainable by doing the rotation. |
There aren’t top plates with adjustable caster available for the 996, at least not that I’ve seen.
The factory top mount is full monoball mount so there’s not a ton of reasons to get rid of it. Most aftermarket top mounts are just copies of the factory Gt3 mount, still without caster adjustment. Idk what range of adjustment you are looking for but the bottom pucks can get you back in the 8-8.5 degree range where you need to be no matter how much camber you put in the car and regardless if you do it through shims or rotating the top mounts. |
Ideal caster is at 8. Your best bet is to install solid adjustable caster pucks in the control arms in place of the rubber bushing that attaches the caster arm (also called the "tuning fork arm") to the lower control arm.

I think the problem with trying to adjust caster from the top plate is the wheel ends up uncentered in the wheel arch and rubbing. This may vary depending on how lowered your car is and how much negative camber you have dialed in.

Appreciate all the comments! I wasn't aware of the wheel centralization complexity when adjusting caster from the top plate. I think I'll forego that route and add the caster pucks to my front LCA's next.

When you install them use the offset hole and keep rotating them until you get zero fender liner interference both front and rear as you do a full sweep of the steering and then take the car to an alignment for final tweaking. you'll be real close to where it needs to be at that point anyhow and shouldn't take much adjustment from there. |
I have used Ground Control on a number of cars - good design, really really lousy monoballs...
WRT Porsche stuff - save your money and use the solid pucks, or if you want really fancy get the RSR adjustable arms. Easy to get 8 deg. Ray |
