I don't believe there is a way to install it backwards really. Bumper wouldn't go on if it was installed in front of the core. Also the thread direction still wouldn't be reversed (think about a bolt on a nut front to back)I
just think it's the wrong part installed in there.
Thanks to everyone for their help. I got a replacement tow-block deal and fixed the issue. Turns out a previous owner had just forced a 991 LH tow hook into the 996 receptacle and destroyed the threads to the point where the normal threads didnt want to work anymore. See attached pics!
