thinking about 996 gt3 purchase
I had my 996tt out at the track yesterday. I was instructing with a local car club and had an opportunity to drive the old girl for a few laps in the "instructors sessions". I took it out for 5-6 laps and got a feel for it... lots of torque and speed but heavy and little in the way of control. The suspension was worn and too plush. The street brakes were not particularly effective. In trying to be easy on the car, I kept it slow and easy for 6-8 laps and then pulled into the paddock... each time noticing that the "guy in the silver 996 gt3" would be just coming up in my mirrors. At the last session I introduced myself and checked out his ride; a 2005 gt3, flawless and all oem except for Pagid brake pads and Nitto tires. He was curious as to why I wouldn't dice with him... I made a few excuses about it being an older car and a creaking suspension ...then I remembered that his was the same generation as mine... well, next session out it was" off with the stability control" and "game on!"
Lap after lap I was impressed with both the braking and precision of his car. Even though I out powered him (a 1.25 bar boost/ tune) and was fast midway thru the straights, he was able to catch up to me by a combination of getting on the throttle early off a corner and late braking into the next corner. I had to take an easy lap here and there because of brake fade... After the session completed he asked me:"street tires?" Yes. (I didn't tell him that they were fresh RE71R's). "Street brakes?" Yes. (I didn't tell him that they were a fresh set of high temp ceramics/steel rotors and a flush of Motul 660.)
.... other than a few other plausable excuses on my part, the guy really kicked my ***. That gt3 is a real drivers car. Now in the market!

I went from a 2003 C2 with 19K original miles to a 2004 GT3 with 26K original miles. My C2 was very setup for track duty. First time out in the GT3...Wow. Just wow. The car was setup like crap on 3 year old crap tires and was still amazing. Just got alignment and corner balance setup to my specs with new drop links and adjustable rear toe lockout kit, along with a set of NT-01s 245/315. Can't wait to see how she does now, will be out next weekend.
I'm not as experienced on the track as some guys here but my observations have been that overall turbos are crap on the track, except for the straights. I have been behind various turbos, watching them squat out of the corners is amusing as I ride their bumper through the turns....both in my C2 and now in the GT3. As said above it's still driver specific of course.

I went from a 996 Turbo to a 996 GT3. The Turbo is a great luxury car and capable on the track. However, it is 300+ pounds and is no match for a 6GT3.

996 GT3 > 996 Turbo all day long. Not even close. Many seconds a lap better.
You won't be disappointed if you get one. Most that are known to this crew are well taken care of and ready to track.

My Porsche journey started with the Yellow 996TT, coming from a Supra I went wild and upgraded the suspension, brakes and bumped up the power to 620awhp. I then got bit by the track bug and we built the somewhat "infamous" Camo 996TT , converted to RWD, 715whp, all the fun brakes and suspension components you could want. It was lightened to 3,050lbs and with the extra power, handing and braking made the car an absolute monster.... then I got to drive a GT3. The power delivery, and most importantly Balance, made me appreciate it so much that I immediately did anything in my power to buy once. 7 years later the 996 GT3 is the one car I won't ever sell, it still requires a ton of respect to extract everything out of it, but that challenge is what keeps me coming back. Buy one and don't look back.

GT3 chassis + Turbo power = GT2
Need all 3 really- GT2, GT3, Turbo- they all have different purposes and do them very well

I remember running against them back in the day. I had a powerful car but no handling. It was impressive to experience the gt3's out maneuvering me in the corner. My only strategy was to take a conservative line to block and then blast out onto the straight. It'd be nice to be in the seat of a 996-3 and flip the coin on that strategy.

Hi All,
I guess I am not surprised to read this, how would the GT2 compare against the GT3? Is the GT2 'just' a GT3 on steroids - assuming the normal track mods?

I love my GT3 and out of the box it’s way better than a turbo....but a well prepped turbo or GT2 would eat a GT3 alive. You don’t see it too often but when turbo guys build a monster there’s very little that can tough them.
Dez’s 996 TT owns the TT1 lap record at Mid Ohio and is 2 full seconds quicker than my TT2 prep GT3.

Take GT3, add widebody + 2 turbos/power and that's pretty much a GT2, suspension and brakes very much identical, gearbox same but different ratios to match earlier redline/more torque
old 6GT2 with a few small mods can still be quicker than the latest and greatest

Were you breaking the tyres loose at the beginning to put some heat in them??
