Default Header upgrades

Hey guys been looking at Header upgrades and feeling there is not much around “re sensible bang for your bucks”
Hear the Fabspeed aren’t worth it, perhaps FVD the only reasonable option?
It’s complex as so many cheap tacky options out there! Thoughts 🤔

What's the rest of the exhaust configuration?

997 GT3 exhaust—if you can find one.

You will need to either modify your rear bumper for the center exhaust or get an aftermarket Cup bumper.

Dundon or Go Cup Bumper/997 GT3 Center with either custom headers or 997 aftermarket.

Not cheap but quite happy with the weight loss / power and sound post-op.

Dundon's exhaust setup sounds the best from what I have heard. They show power gains as well on their website dyno graphs. Has anyone independently verified gains on the Dundon kit?

Phil from Fabspeed here.
I am sorry to hear you have heard that about our headers. I would be glad to help you out if you have any question. What are you looking for out of your exhaust mods?

I haven't on a 996 GT3 (oddly enough nor have I even bothered to dyno my own car since changing either), however we did an independent test for Matt of Obsessed Garage on his 991 GT3 and the results were staggering, 45hp/30tq on our Dynojet. Their stuff is the real deal, full disclosure I probably would have gone that route myself but like utilizing our fabrication department for my personal projects mainly as a challenge.

Still really need to know what the OP has for exhaust setup currently. If it’s some “modular” system in stock diameter and that portion of the exhaust isn’t going to change then there’s really no point in headers.

Thanks for all the insights guys.
To clarify currently running the factory headers, cats removed, factory mufflers removed and a very open flow STARR centre race muffler.
Sound and performance is great but the factory headers are holding it back.

stock diameter tubing or larger than stock?

Any of the units worth buying aren't going to be a direct fit and will require some fabrication, if you've got a good fab guy this won't be an issue.

I purchased the standard 996 GT3 FVD long tube headers and didn't like the fact that they choked down to 55mm at the collector so we cut the collectors off and made proper merge collectors that went down to 63mm and then back out to 70mm on exit...which is what the rest of my exhaust is.

FVD makes another set that is 70mm collectors but will require a little more fab work based on collector placement. Have a feeling the Dundon units, if you could even get just the headers alone, would also terminate at a spot that's going to require some fab work to get them to work.

Don't expect gains that the newer cars see on a 996, but there are some to be had there none the less mainly in mid range torque. My lap times pre and post headers aren't too much different but the sound is even better and I had to rebuild my old exhaust anyhow so it was fun to integrate long tubes into the build.

JB 996 GT3 Can you post a pic of your STARR exhaust? I have an aftermarket muffler on my 996 cup that I was told may be Starr and I’m curious to see if it’s the same as the one you have. Mine is stock diameter piping all the way through and it’s a big difference versus my old 996 GT3 road car which had a full M&M exhaust with 70mm collectors.

Perhaps it was 57mm. Now that you say it 70mm sounds too big. All I know is the collector was huge and it did not step down into the muffler. The street car had way more torque than the cup car with a far better midrange. Probably on account of exhaust, tune and ipd plennum/997 tb but I put it down to the exhaust mainly. Perhaps the variocam help too as the cup has nothing before 6k rpm

The STARR units have a very clear large BRANDED metal plate identifying them in the centre so should be simple to check! They are fantastic but not street legal
